Real Madrid, scored a quite brilliant hat trick against us at Old Trafford in the champions league and he was substituted towards the end, to a man the whole stadium gave him a standing ovation, he was proper embarrassed! There was a better crowd there then, no lie. Zidane played that game and was doubtless excellent but he was just overshadowed. I remember that game, I distinctly remember seeing the line ups come up and thinking O'Shea is going to get absolutely torn to pieces! But to be fair he held his own against one of the best wingers in the world. Cracking game, Ronaldo makes finishing look piss easy.
O'Shea was a gifted young full back in those days. It might even have been that game he meged Salgado or whoever it was going down the left wing. Not sure to be honest. It wasn't a vintage United side if i'm honest, not by a long stretch.
Thereabouts, at the time he genuinely looked a prospect for a centre midfielder. He was victim of his own versitility, a lot better than people gave him credit for.
Good squad player and a good professional, like you said he received some unnecessary stick. No Albert Ferrer thought
To be fair to Ferrer, he had Rivaldo (probably the best player in the world at that time) in his back pocket when we beat Barca at the Bridge! Had a proper stormer.
Prefer the 'We all know that Jonny is going to score' one myself. Two songs though, not bad for a so called **** player. The majority don't get one.
O'Shea will always be held in high regard by us supporters, he may not have been the most skilful player, but he was very reliable, and to my knowledge rarely let us down when called upon
