The main reason I don`t like penalty shoot outs is that football is a team game but the penalties don't reflect this. As a result individuals end up as the hero or the dummy, which is not fair on them. In a play off match as in Huddersfield vs. Sheff. UTD one misplaced kick can cost the club millions in revenue. A team based alternative could be to reduce the game to a 5 a side match after extra time. Also Sepp Blatter is Swiss and not German.

That is true, but it would be the case however you solved the problem. The scorer will always be a hero and the keeper will always feel like a villain as he let the ball cross the line. We will never change that. For example (on a much smaller scale) on Monday night i was in goal playing against 5 other men (all 30+) and we were 3 up but always play last goal wins as of 10pm, so as 10 came we said last goal and the opposing team broke away and i made a mistake when coming to claim the ball which ended up in the net. I felt a bit stupid and like i had let the team down.

The final solution is a shootout. Give each player a gun and the last player standing his team wins.

I really don't understand Step Bladder's problem - far too much tinkering with the game at his behest IMO, why can't he just leave well alone? For mine, there's nothing wrong a penalty shoot-out as it adds to the tension and creates a better spectacle. But if we absolutely must do away with it.........

    1) After extra time, use a countback of shots on-target and/or corners during the 120 minutes;

    or

    2) Do away with the stupid offside rule, which may negate the need for extra time in the first place, never mind a penalty shoot-out. Of course, the fans who like nothing more than to hurl abuse at the officials over 'incorrect' decisions may not be happy with that one............

BB, you've given me an idea. Perhaps the ref should decide who wins.

We'd better go with that one before SB declares that he will be the one who decides the result of every game played on the planet. ;)

No, the offside rule stops extremely flukey, hoofballing goal hanging.

For example, if Watford were camped with everyone except Iwelumo back in our half, and Iwelumo is in the opposition penalty box and Nosworthy was to hoof the ball that far or whatever, it bounces off of Iwelumo's head and in, that just reduces the game to long, hoofing, which is what the FA are trying to reduce at Youth Level, so why have it at a higher level? It'd cause either, the two CB's of the opposing, pressing, team, to be further up the pitch which just encourages Iwelumo to stand there, or they just camp on the goal line. The sport has changed so much since when the offside rule wasn't around, and the game is a lot better with it than without it. It's allowed teams to HAVE to be smarter in the way they play, not just stick a big lump on the keeper and hope for the best.

    And you know this how?

I can't for a minute believe that you were around in 1848 when the rule was introduced. ;)

But cancelling the rule altogether does seem the next logical step, given the progression that the authorities have applied since its inception:

    1) Originally, offside meant that a player couldn't stand in front of the ball at all - 1848
    2) It progressed to the 'four opponent' rule - 1856
    3) Then the 'three opponent' rule - 1863
    4) Then the 'two opponent' rule - 1925
    5) Then, effectively the 'one opponent' rule in 1990 - ie level with one but behind another.

Their latest tinkering is simply too hard to effectively apply and is patently unworkable without relying on video technology, so either the rule should be done away with altogether or someone with a bit of commonsense should sit down and devise an easily workable rule - one that is simple to understand (for players and fans alike), simple to administer and avoids controversy. Unfortunately for the game, FIFA have decreed that they are in charge, so the latter will never happen.

True - but 1840 was my twelfth reincarnation, so I've 'been around' for a while and picked up a lot of information along the way. ;)

Didn't the Americans try a rule where you could only be offside within 20m of goal? The drew an extra line on the pitch to make it clearer, I think.
