How far does the board let someone like RVP dictate policy? Should they let him provide the list of players he wants or let him have final say on whether an individual is good enough for him? I appreciate RVP's position, but do we really want to empower an individual player, who has his own agenda, to such an extent?
This is a good point. A healthy club with a balanced squad would never allow a player even the best one to try to dictate or even discuss its transfer policy. That is waht we pay for our mistakes.
Were there any actual RVP quotes about this or is it more media twisting of fans musings? I agree we need to invest, I agree if I were him I'd not stay if I saw no progress player-wise. I also agree it's probably not about the money with him. Does he confirm any of it though?
As far as I know, RVP hasn't been quoted saying any of this, but he has said in the past (along with other players) that we need to strengthen with quality and experienced players. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the claims that RVP is waiting to see if we will do so are true. He doesn't strike me as the sort of person who is holding the club ransom for a big pay cheque, but instead, like the fans, wants to see that the club is showing ambition to win trophies.
I think it's a mix of the two. Money and success. He would be chicken oriental if it wasn't so. Also, someone needs to show him a video of his highlights from last season. If our wanting to keep him at our club doesn't show ambition and our desire to sign the very best, what does?
I think he deserves a pay rise to be honest - but more than that he needs to be playing alongside players of similar quality. I don't think we're far off - but we've come up short for too many seasons for us not to address the fact that we still need some more quality in the squad.
