A few weeks ago with Seb being ruled out for the last couple of games to the season, Elmo out of favor and Campbell not exactly a winger I was surprised we never tried out James McClean on the right wing. In the modern game its a common thing for wingers to play on the opposite side and being able to come inside and play someone in behind or have a pop at goal themselves and I was as I have said surprised that it wasn't tried out even if it was just for 5-10mins during a game. I see Trapatoni came out last week and said that he wanted to have a look at McClean in not just his natural LW position but also to see what he has when he plays on the other flank and by reports he played a half on the RW yesterday. IMO its good that its being tried and it will improve the lads game, he will become a more versatile footballer and I would imagine his ability with his right foot will improve. As I said I was surprised it was not tried, the lad is a big lad who likes to run with the ball and is not shy of trying a shot, him running at the LB, cutting inside and having a go with his left peg.
With Redan on this one he is predominantly left footed (no religious overtones there), no doubt he will learn to use his right boot if he remembers where it is.
Its something id like to see next year. He's effective but he is very one dimensional and some full backs figure him out. When this happens id like to see him switched to the right to have a go cutting in onto the left backs weaker foot. He'll get alot more shots off too cutting in from the right
It's like Ben Arfa. He ALWAYS cuts in to get on his left foot. All a defender has to do is know that he will cut in on his left foot and they can cut him out.
That's why the ones who are best at it are unpredictable and can go both ways. McClean needs to work on his right foot to be able to be effective on the right if he ever plays there
With an automatic you dont need a left foot, could be good training for him......Or.... death on the roads for others.
This is true.....maybe strap his left peg to the console and just use the right......... But i ****ing hate auto's lazy twats, take the fun out of driving..................
I hate auto's as well. I've tried it, and I always have to move my left foot. Also I love gear changing, get it on the revs and gear change. Feels more manly ha! Regarding left foot/right foot. IMO premiership footballers should be able to use both feet. Obviously not the same skill level for both feet, but enough to pass and use the other foot.
