After a commanding end to the season, the Liverpool striker was included in manager Roy Hodgson's Three Lions squad for the finals in Poland and Ukraine next month.

And former England and Newcastle striker Shearer believes Carroll has the ability to leave a lasting impression on the tournament.

"He has finished the season well," he said. "The Andy Carroll that I saw coming on against Chelsea in the FA Cup final was the Andy Carroll I have seen week in and week out at Newcastle.

"He was bullying defenders, scoring goals, running the channels. The ability is there."

Carroll ended the campaign with three goals in seven appearances, but that statistic only tells half the story with the No.9 also turning in a series of displays that were described as 'unplayable'.

Shearer believes those performances offered just a glimpse of the striker's true potential.
 
I suspect he will be used in the crouch role.. So when we are losing and running out of ideas we will resort to hoofing long balls up to him..
 
I cant really see the England strikers scoring many goals at the Euros without Rooney. Wellbeck has never scored for England and will prob start the first two, Carroll has one goal for England and has been awful bar the last month of the season, England will prob have to rely on Defoe or the midfield to score until Rooney gets back and they could be out by then.
 
England's striker don't normally get many when it comes to competitions anyway so that will be no change, just have to see, they may surprise us this time round, or maybe not.

The same Rooney who has never scored in a world cup and hasn't scored in an international tournament since Euro 2004? Club form means very little.

Oh he's right - probably similar to the impression that a burglar who does a massive ****e on your duvet leaves but an impression nonetheless <ok>.
 
In terms of a plan B striker Caroll was the obvious choice. Sturridge had a good first six months of the season but if his own club dosen't trust him as a central striker why should
England? For what its worth I'd have took him over Downing.
The other options were a pair of 31 year olds who won't be around in two years time and who are pretty limited jouneymen centre forwards. Caroll might flop but we don't know the limit of his potential yet so taking him was a sensible decision. At 7/1to be top England scorer I think he might be value.
 
I predict no goals from Carroll in the tournament. Happy to eat humble pie if he does, I always rated him but just not convinced. Funny that, in wellbeck and Carroll, we could potentially start with 2 players who played up front for Preston.
 
Let's be honest, foreign defenders are ****.

They'll see a big strong lad and **** their pants.

Carroll will run riot at the Euros.
