A lot of people say Holt could not cut it at international level. But what does that even mean? Considering the high amount of foreign players in the EPL, is the EPL not international level?

Why is Euro 2012 any tougher than the EPL? Are Sweden and Ukraine prem quality? Maybe but top 6? nope, well if Holt can score agaisnt top 6 EPL teams then why not against the majority of Euro teams?

Holt has scored against some of the England defenders likely to be in the Euro squad, so does that mean those defenders are not good enough for England if they concede goals against the so called journeyman tyre fitter...?

Every Euro 2012 team is not Spain quality, a lot of the players in the Euros are not EPL quality.

The EPL is the toughest league in the world, Holt has more than proved himself at that level. He's scored 15 league goals in an unfashionable team, imagine how many goals he could score with Rooney and Gerrard behind him...

Holt for Euro 2012 is just common sense.

Get Grant Holt on the plane.

He's been quite good this season, but I don't think he will be going. Striker line-up will be Rooney, Crouch, Defoe (maybe), Carroll (unfortunately)

There is no reason why he shouldn't be going. He's proved himself in the prem against the top teams and is the second highest scoring English forward in the league, and with Rooney being suspended for the first two games, that makes Holt the highest scoring forward available. What more does the man have to do to be selected? Although I do fear Carroll will be selected instead despite having about 4 good games all season.

Maybe it'll be different as Roy has a different upbringing in English football, but usually you get picked based on the strength of the team you play for, not your own ability.

Agree with you there, no point in taking an out of form player over an in form player purely because they play for a top team. Give others a chance, players that will fight for the shirt. I dread to think what I will do if Downing gets selected, the useless waste of space.

Downing is pretty damn poor, correct. However, nobody on the left side that's been in top form. Adam Johnson hasn't played really. Young could be played on that side, but not ideal. Having said that, last time an 'in-form' player was selected, it was Jay Bothroyd, god only knows why

I would go for young on the left, either LM or LW depending on the formation, providing he can keep his diving tendencies under control. But after him there doesn't seem to be a great deal of promise anywhere. Adam Johnson needs to move clubs so he can get a regular run in a team, unless he's happy collecting medals as a bench warmer and a bit part player.

Hang on, we have an opportunity to take some young players and blood them in a major tournament here. Yet people are calling for a 31 year old journeyman to be selected? Utter madness. We can't win this tournament and might not get out of the group. Shouldn't we take the opportunity to give young players who will be around the next few tournaments some experience?

The main argument for not taking Holt is that at these tournaments he would be penalised all the time. He is a handful but that is because he is physical and aggressive. I am not sure he would get away with it at the Euros. Also playing him blind into a Championship is quite a risk. However, I must admit I am surprised Carroll is going :s.

Why are you so adamant that we have no hope here? Would you expect your club team to just throw away a series of matches by playing youngsters that aren't good enough yet or would you rather the best team possible selected to play and attempt to win every game? If these 'youngsters' are the future of English football, they will either be good enough to play or they won't be, a few matches now won't make or break their international careers, but they may cost us progress in the tournament. I just think this theory of needing to blood players in to make them used to international football is rubbish. Select the best team possible from the players that have played the best throughout the season for their respected clubs.

This goes for all players, not just Holt. However, while on the subject, I do agree he commits a lot of fouls but he does win an awful lot too. So far the best defences in the league have struggled to contain him and they have all be international standard so why should this change in the Euros? All i know is that I would MUCH rather have Holt in my team rather than Carroll or Crouch. I think he would pair up really well with Welbeck and would love to see this combination tried out at least in a friendly. However, this is all academic as the likelyhood is that he won't selected.

Would have been Hollywood stuff! Shame Hodgson didn't get a copy of the script. A belting game scoring the winner in the final against zee Germans would have capped off a nice rise from tyre fitter to England hero! Oh well. He's still legend wherever he ends up next year.

The reason he didn't get picked and was never going to is because he's never played for England before and doesn't have any international form. Neither is he young enough to be considered promising for the future. Good club form gives a player a shot in the team, international form takes a player to a tournament.

I personally rate Grant Holt very highly and believe it is unfortunate timing more than any other reason as to why he hasn't got a callup.

If you're going to judge a player based on performances in the Championship or League 1, both Lambert and Rhodes would be ahead of him.

Lambert and Rhodes have not done it in the prem yet. Rhodes will play for England one day.
