On the old 606, we had a thread that discussed the greatest ever Swansea team. At that time, no current player was really put forward. Here's my selection pre BR ******** R Freestone ********** C coleman *** T Smith **** J Salako ************* J Molby ************** ******* R James ****** F Lampard ******** A curtis ****** I Allchurch ********** C Jones ************ Bob Latchford************* Congrats to Michel Vorm, Ashley Williams and Leon Britton for making into my all time team>>>>WHAT A SIDE!!!!>>>>> *********** M Vorm ************* C coleman ***** A Williams********** T Smith ************* L Britton************** ******* R James ****** F Lampard ******** A Curtis ****** I Allchurch ********** C Jones ************ Bob Latchford************* ....and a couple more are pushing on the door. Who knows how good our current team may get, and how we will remember them in regards to our heroes of yesteryear.
Swim, do like your pre BR team. Will say Jimmy should be in their before Salako. Will post my teams later.
Two formidable line-ups there, swim, many of whom would be in my "Best ever" team. However,if I can nitpick, and not get into a major brawl,I don't think Lampard, who was a loanee, should be considered. In his place I would go for Mel Charles. Also,in the goalkeeping position,I would go for any of the following, viz, Rimmer;Millington;Dwyer;and your choice Freestone. I would have to flick a coin to decide. Any Swansea Town/City "Best team" should,in my opinion, include the great Harry Griffiths. Harry was such a terrific, versatile player, and could play almost anywhere to great effect. Unsung hero,if ever there was one. Every team needs a Harry Griffiths, and we were lucky to have him. We have been blessed with such a fantastic array of talent down the years,so much so that the players left out become the subject worthy of lengthy debate. What about Trevor Ford;Roy Paul;Herbie Williams, who filled Ivor's boots so well,we didn't notice any difference after he left for Newcastle. Then there's Mel Nurse;Eddie Thomas;Lee Trundle;Leighton James,oh,I could go on. So no wrong answers here, only opinions. So,to sum up,my team would be,(wait for it), Rimmer Paul Nurse Griffiths M.Charles R.James L.James A.Curtis I.Allchurch C.Jones T.Ford
So no-one makes it from the current set up? PS, your not taking Lampard off me, I got enough stick for fielding John Charles in my original 606 line up based on him being a youth player!
"So no-one makes it from the current set up?" At the moment,no,but who is to say that will not change over time. I in no way diminish the current crop of players, but to me the jury is still out on too many of them. How do you go about choosing a "Best team" when the Club is 100 years old? Impossible task really. I still don't think Lampard should come into the calculation, and John Charles shouldn't have been in your BBC606 side either,so the "stick" was fully justified. Sorry. What we should rejoice in is that the history of Swansea Town/City is so rich in talent that it may be inconceivable to some to realise that the current players may not be "the best" to ever represent the Club. That is what makes me particularly proud to be a Jack.
**** ... forgot about the recently deceased Giorgio Chinaglia. Maybe he sneaks in ahead of Latchford! PS ... Lampard stays!
No problem with you keeping Lampard, swim, but I feel you have been seduced by the name and his Chelsea carreer, which,of course, has been immense. Remind me as to how many games he played for The Swans'? He was a "rookie" when he came down The M4,and to choose him is an insult to others more deserving. Borini made an immediate, and remarkable contribution last season in just a handful of games. Did you consider him before opting for Latchford? Georgio Chinaglia,ah,what a great player he turned out to be,but his time at The Vetch, well, what can I say? Georgio wouldn't get in ahead of Pintado based on his days at Swansea. RIP Georgio.
If Pintado was worth £7 mill, how much for Giorgio at his peak? Yes, I did consider Borini but he didn't make it. Obviously, I have used players whose best days were not neccisarily at the Vetch. That's why it's subjective ! I take on board your point , though. PS ... your team looks half decent, buddy!
£7mill for Gorka was a bit of Martinez nonsense, showing that he had a sense of humour. Still makes us laugh just thinking about it. Pintado took some stick, but I had a bit of a soft spot for him. He scored a cracker against the bloobs,I seem to remember, and that alone should guarantee him hero status down here. I have no recall as to the fees Giorgio went for after leaving Swansea. It was such a long time ago,so the sums wouldn't have been the telephone numbers they are now. Remarkable story, real rags to riches affair, which left those who had seen him, completely flabbergasted. "your team looks half decent",so does yours swim, but if they had played against each other,I think you would have subbed Frankie boy after about 20 minutes, maybe less.
Latchford??? Pah. Give me Walter Boyd! Interesting debate for sure and an almost impossible task really. I tend to lean towards having some of our current line up to be honest. I know I'm in the minority but I don't think the stars of old would live with the pace and general standard of today's game. Players have to be not just physically quicker but mentally too because you have less time on the ball. So for that reason I'd leave out some of the old stagers (whilst acknowledging they were great players in their day). Surprised Chris Coleman didn't make anyone's cut.
We are in accord about it being "an almost impossible task",Knackered. In fact,I would remove "an almost",because it really IS an "impossible task". The game has changed down the years, and I agree with you when suggesting that Stars of old would be less effective in todays arena. Therein lies the "impossibility" of the task. Perhaps "Best teams" in particular eras would be more relevant, then that scenario would be less of a problem. The Swans' had a great team in the 1920's,but I doubt anyone here would have seen them. My choices won't please everyone, but that's the nature of the exercise. How about a "Worse team" ever, now I've got more than enough names to produce more than one team. Only kidding. Every Swansea player is a hero,it's just a question of degree.
It's a choice made harder by the style of football that you would play. So here's a line up that I think could play our contemporary style but with some twists. Vorm Charles (Mel) ....... Daniel ......... Williams (Ash) Allchurch (Len) ..... Paul ...... Sykes ........ Callaghan ....... Jones (Cliff) Ivor Curtis There are a few players that should be auomatic.
can't say i know too much about Joe Sykes, Ray Daniel or Roy Paul (I assume it's them?). You leave Robbie out of an all time Swansea line up man ?....... blasphemer!
I just remembered Ray Daniel,so it's good to see his name in Yankee's team. Very interesting to see you have included Lenny Allchurch,Yankee. Great winger, very deceptive, excellent crosser, and could score goals. Joe Sykes was a real Swansea Town stalwart. He has been described as "one of the first legends of the Club". "Extremely good in the air, despite only being 5ft 8in tall." Oh,and he was a "doyen of the carpet passes". So Joe would fit in very nicely with todays team.He spotted Ivor playing in a local park, and the rest,as they say,...
My team ... Tate tate tate tate tate tate tate tate tate tate tate OK we wont win many games if any at all, but we would have a bloody loyal team..
Right on the first three swim - Ray Daniel came to us from Arsenal I believe. It's tough to figure out who to leave out. Robbie would command a spot in a 22 man squad and think of the competition for places there would be. I'm putting Sykes in midfiled as back in his day the "center half" role was more creative and forward playing. I'm going with 3 at the back since I figure that with Cliff and Len there's not going to be much coming down the wings - the other team will be too worriei about them. Curtis makes it as the lone striker since he could receive the ball at any angle, hold it tight and turn the best defender uo his own backside. With Ivor behind him and Cliff and Len out wide there'd be all sorts of chaos in the final third. Callaghan is in there because who can forget the way he sprayed passes around the Vetch - a busy player if there was one. With Rogers as Manager and Sousa as coach we would take some beating. In fact our reserve team would take some beating. My list of reserves would include Joe Allen, Robbie, Medwin, Nurse, and quite frankly too many others to mention. In a few years time perhaps Sig could be on that list.
Of course if we wanted to bend the rules a little ... Big John did play for us against Leeds in Ivor's testimonial. So he would be an automatic ... position = on the field.
Right going to post my team, I'm only picking players that I have seen play. GK - Freestone (Rimmer & Stewart very close) RB - Gary Stanley LB - Dzemal Hziabdich (Wyndam Evans very close) CB - Tommy Smith CB - Ante Rekovich MD - Leon Britton MD - Robbie James (God would strike me down if Robbie wasn't in) MD - Ian Callaghan LW - Nathan Dyer (It was either Nathan or Leighton James, Nathan won the coin toss) CF - Bob Latchford RW - Alan Curtis
