First time ever it wasn't me I think whoever comes in we'll all have some reservations but one thing I do know is RM would at least try and get us playing good football (as we were in the main last year). Let's hope for a resolution soon so we can get back to chatting about unrealistic transfer targets etc
I switched my preferance from AVB to Martinez after listening to the latest TAW (The Anfield Wrap) podcast. Stories of AVB at Chelsea (not just with players) has put me off him. Martinez seems like the exact opposite and is worth the risk. And it is a risk, but we need to do something differently. The 1st sign of madness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result! We haven't won the league for 23 yrs - something has to give. Liverpool 2.0 if you like. I hope it's Martinez and he is given the time and respect he deserves. YNWA
It baffles me that there was little or no patience for what Kenny was trying to do and all I've heard this past week are lectures from the media about having to be patient. I was already patient and my grandmother can already suck eggs, thanks very much. To me Martinez is Rafa Lite. I like the guy and he deserves a shot upwards but I can't see anybody getting the patience. Even mild-mannered slo-mo club executive Dave Whelan is losing the rag. Media muppets need short-term headlines, which are diametrically opposed to the concept of patience and too many fans are led by the media.
This probably sums it up best. We have gone down the routes of experienced managers, title winning managers but we've also went for a safe option with Roy ... I still feel that we need a big name to work alongside as Sporting Director - someone who can attract the big names (not sure what Martinez's appeal is like across Europe).
I think if it is Martinez than it will be Txiki that will be DoF and we will have a nice spanish contingent with the DofF, Manager, Reserve coach, and Academy coaches. Also talk of bringing back the former GK coach who Pepe liked will add to that as well.
It's the STRUCTURE that's the most important here not the manager. Look at Barca - will they crumble when the gaffer leaves? No, because they have the structure in place from the kids up, platying the same way with the same ethos. That is what I hope FSG are focussing on because it may take a few managers to come and go until we find our next messiah! I hope it's Martinez and they back him with the finances required to push for 4th, Haal for DoF perhaps? btw it will be intersting to see if Man Utd have the structure to cope with losing Ferguson when he packs it in, I'm not convinced...
I really do hope it is Txiki - I can see two working well together, alongside Segura and Borrell. The Spanish Boot Room
I completely agree with you, which is why I feel Txiki would be a better choice to work with Martinez.
You have a point about Martinez and patience, but lets be honest here...even the most experienced manager wouldn't get the patience deserved if they were not achieving the high expectations at LFC. Whether it is Martinez, Rafa or Maureen/Pep...if they didn't reach top 4 next season there would be an outcry for change, just the state of the modern game. My fear with Martinez is that he may not be given the patience to begin with. I believe he would be a good manager for us if he survives his first season and could be with us for a few years.
A structure like this. http://www.thisisanfield.com/2012/05/a-brave-new-world/ Apologies if link rubbish, Iphoning it.
Something tells me the next manager will get longer because it's the owners own model. (look! Being positive!!) I think they lacked patience as much with the overall structure of the club last year (which they didn't believe could be changed while KD was still in place) think that's why KD was doomed unless he got top 4. The owners just didn't believe we were set up right from top to bottom & weren't happy with the half assed measures they'd been forced to put in place to accommodate KD. I do think they won't be as fretful now they're getting to do what they wanted all along. I think the only message with a negative twinge from them is that the manager may stay if he doesn't make top 4 but he'll not get a lot of funds while he doesn't quite make it.
I agree with the article - I think it's the way forward and Martinez is probably the best candidate suited to it. However, only if the rest of the personnel are employed in the right positions as the article defines.
I don't really believe Kenny was sacked for not hitting fourth this season. I think it was more that we were 17 points off it, and had a string of poor results in the last half of the season. If we'd have been closer I think they may have given him more time. I'm not convinced the next manager will have to get fourth in his first term in order to keep his job, he'll just have to get us going purposefully in the right direction. At least I hope this is the case, I don't want us to end up like Chelsea-repeatedly sacking managers who have done ok, trying to find the magical all- conquering formula.
Who would you prefer? Is it a matter of AVB or Martinez? For me I keep going back and forth, they both certainly have their positives and negatives. I have a feeling that AVB may already have the capacity to be a natural winner (from his time at Porto)...with Martinez I'm not sure but think he is more likely to grow into that sort of mentality. I think either would get a lot of flak throughout next season but both of them could well be great managers for us n years to come.
It wasn't a case of not getting 4th. It was combined with the fact that it was our lowest finish in decades, lowest goals scored and lowest games won at Anfield. But agree, had we shown more 'statistical' evidence that we had progressed, he would still be here.
I was referring to the impatience of the fans more than the owners, although that shouldn't really have an effect on their decisions. I just don't want another Hodgeson situation, it was bad enough with KK even before we went on that horrible run.
Yup, fans are fickle. You only have to look how opinion is divided on here to see that whatever happens, there'll be plenty who aren't happy about it. I just hope that whoever we get, the fans give him the support he needs, unless and until he shows he's not up to the job. I'm perplexed when some fans I know (not necessarily on here) seem happy for us to fail just so they can say "told you so".
