Fifa president Sepp Blatter has asked Bayern Munich honorary president Franz Beckenbauer to come up with an alternative to the "tragedy" of penalty shoot-outs.

Beckenbauer is head of the Football Task Force 2014, a group designed to recommend rule changes.

"Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks," Blatter said.
"Football should not go to one to one. When it goes to penalty kicks football loses its essence."
He added: "Perhaps Franz Beckenbauer with his football 2014 group can show us a solution, perhaps not today but in the future."

Funny how good 'ol Franz's team lose on penalties and its a tragedy... Don't hear Blatter talking about the 'tragedy' of Lampard's clear goal to make it 2-2 vs Germany being disallowed.

I suppose the point I'm trying to make is that Penalties are fine.
They may be harsh for the losing team, but they are exciting and decisive, and each team get equal opportunity to win the game

Nothing wrong with penalties but both teams should be allowed to take them in front of their own fans

If a game ends in a draw after 90 minutes, then every 3 minutes thereafter a player should be removed from the field. After 30 minutes the 10th man goes off and it's 1v1. If it is somehow still a draw, then they play 1v1 until someone scores, which shouldn't take too long

In actual game time I find it excessive when a penalty is given and a player gets sent off. I love shoot outs at the end of games though... unless my team is involved... unless we win.

I'd go with what was said above. 1 Player gets removed every (say) 5 minutes until a team scores.

That or, instead of penalties a player get's a 1 on 1 from the half-way line.
