Now then.. Just had a read of the boards over the last year for the last hour or so (Ella's at Grans tonight ) and seen a few remarks by many how Keane was the ultimate ****e manager and all that.. Hate to disagree lads but if it wasn't for Keane, the backs against the walls season in 2006 we would be nowhere near to where we are now a Premiership club. He took us from 23rd in the Championship Table to win it in style and who can forget that away day in Luton? From the Connelley's to the Kavannah's he got it right that year at a time when we were at our lowest. I never missed a game back then through the 15 point & 19 point seasons and for me Keane was our godsend.. Granted, he ****ed it all up later when in the Prem with crazy buys and as he as said, filling the team up with players he didn't really want but who would make the numbers up.. Niall never left the club skint and neither am I aware any other Drumaville member did neither so money cannot of been lost. Before the stats trolls appear with the flummery and waffle, this is my opinion that the lad was sound at Safc, got us in 1 season which I believe no other manager at the time available could of and we wouldn't be here talking on a Premiership board if it wasn't for him This is my opinion though, feel free to add yours
Bought his way out of the championship. He is the man responsible who started to finally attract big players to the club. Not a premiership manager. Was found out at Ipswich that without money he is a very poor manager.
We have alot to be thankful for towards him. He helped get us out of the Championship and start getting some bigger names and getting rid of some of the dross we had originally when he took over. As SAFC83 mentioned, money played a massive part in this. But he is such a stubborn bastard who refuses to change which is his undoing. It's his way or no-way, which is something that you cannot have in football, you have to be adaptable and ever changing to get the best out of everyone.
TBH I have no complaints about anyone brought in after the Quinn takeover, yes they all came to a sticky end but, only my opinion, each one, Keane, Spragier, Bruce and now O'Neill have all been part of taking our life time yoyo club and making them an established premier club. I get a lot of flack and comments about being a Bruce lover, silly comment in my opinion, but to me I'm an appreciator of the good each manager brought. So no complaints from me Joe, some forget what it was like before Quinn and Keane.
Sat through the 15 point season did you? or the start of the 2006 season with Quinny managing the team? Were you at Roots Hall when Southend beat us 3-0? I was marra and that poor manager got us promoted that year
Yes I sat through the 15 point season, thanks for asking. Yes I sat through the 2006 season with Quinn's ill fated stint as manager. Thanks for asking. No I wasn't at Roots Hall because I lived on the continent. Does living abroad not allow me to have an opinion? He then began to fail at us. He then bottled it. He then failed at Ipswich. He then became a very good pundit. Seem to remember Phil Brown getting Hull Promoted, a bigger achievement than getting Sunderland promoted. I don't rate him either. You asked for my true opinion and met it with condescension. Poor form that, don't ask next time.
Keane up until the newcastle win done absolutely fantastic for us, he came in and took us from the bottom of the oleague after 3 or 4 games and won us it. The bloke was a breath of fresh air and got Sunderland on the map again. The second season and the first in the prem he might of over payed on players but as he said the players he wanted some wouldn't come and the money he spent on dross was fine in my opinion and many others I imagine as he done the job of keeping us in the league. The summer after I was impressed with the players he went and brought in the likes of Chimbonda, Malbranque, Cisse, Ferdinand, Djouf and McCartney were all improvements even if we did pay over the top for a few of them. As I said up until that Newcastle game things were great especially beating them 2-1 but from then on it went down hill very quickly and in the end Keano done the best thing for all parties and left. I love the bloke and I will remember him for coming in untried, getting us off our knee's when we easily could of done a Leeds and took us up at the first attempt then kept us up. The bloke put us on the map again and attracted a better class of player to the club that we all should be greatful for. I hope he gets back into management soon
I won't do prick grrrrrr hey, lets have a beer sometime? So after the 15 point did you think the season after we would be promoted or win the Championship? I'm not talking about ****ing Ipswich mate or our latter years I'm talking about how he dragged us out of a ****ing hole! If in doubt read the ****ing thread again
Joe, It sounds like you just want opinions that match your own and aren't willing to tolerate other peoples, disco gave his opinion and you came back having a go at him , it seemed way over the top. He then gave a dignified reply to your response and you came back again with a bad tempered response and it wasn't nice to see and seemed very over the top, in my opinion.
Everybody has bad days I'll put it down to that. Not going to get upset by someone acting like a caveman behind his computer screen because I disagree with him. Cheers though. Joe... Yeah he had a great season, wouldn't have expected him to the way it started and it was fantastic. One good season which I'm very thankful for but if I give him credit for what he did well I'm going to state my displeasure for what he did poorly. Just read the thread through and you suggest you 'hate to disagree'. Pull the other one.
And as for the suggestion that we have a beer, I hope you mean separately otherwise, I'd prefer to suffer testicular torsion after that rant.
Nah not bad tempered at all, just remember that great season after the crap, the Burnley & Luton games and think, "where would we be now if that didn't happen"?
Turned us round Kept us up Raised our profile Spunked massive cash on every player going Threw toys out of pram ****ed off Sounds like the basis for a film, really?
For what my opinion is worth, the sun is shinning, a nice break from the traumas of following football, a potential exciting window ahead followed by an exciting season, we all love those little boys in red and white. What is there to fall out over, we all love, like, hate our own depending on us, I love, like or tolerate you lot and dont intend falling out with anyone today.
tHE CORNER HAD BEEN TURNED BEFORE rk TOOK OVER, some perceptive fools may say. He's an angel who has been doomed with bad luck and has been unlucky with players who bottled it and were not of the same calibre as him in his playing days. God I love Roy, he's so misunderstood, he's not a bully, he's a very sensitive artisitic type. Woodbridge wept when he left, his hallowed feet treading the footpaths round Ipswich will be sorely missed by all East Anglians. Ellis Short should be ashamed to bring a hero like Roy to book. It wasn't like it had all gone to **** and all good managers just spend the odd minute on the training pitch. RICKY SPRAGIA was the problem at Sunderland, he wasn't up to the job of managing and training the squad! How can Roy be expected to bully players in a good way when the coach is liked and respected by the players. God Roy I love you and your **** Punditry, please do us all a big one though and punch Childs before you **** off into footballing obscurity, you footballing legend you! OH ROY!!!
