Four years ago today....
One of only 3 occasions I have cried like a baby at a football game. I'm emotional, OK? Deal with it, Yeah! (personal note: must stop reading EDG Wright's ramblings!!)
This clip is better. We and Bristol still hold the record for Play-off final attendances. Not a BIG Club??? My AR5E!!
Can't believe it's four years ago now. Sun is shining today just like it was on that day, and indeed the sun shone for Tigers fans that day!
One of only 3 occasions I've seen my old man cry - the other 2 were his parent's funerals. Out of interest, which other 2 games made you cry?
I remember it well, 1 of the best days I have ever had as a City fan. Just wish I could have been there, but watched it in a pub in Manchester with Bristol City fans sitting in 1 area & Hull fans standing in the centre. I think I spilt some beer at that point!
Last game at BP and the walk of legends (seeing Jock Davidson being helped round by Waggy and Chillo pushed me over the edge!) And that fcuking game at Turf Moor May 15th 1984!
All right mate, were you one of the small bunch of City fans that watched the semi final 2nd leg v Watford in the Friendship Inn, Fallowfield on the same day Rangers fans trashed Manchester?
No I got a bus into the City centre, but couldn't find it anywhere so went back home & watched it on my laptop.
Not much of a crier but it's safe to say that I had goosebumps for the whole 7 minutes of that clip - I really didn't appreciate it enough back then, it could be a long time before we're back.
Same. I understood the game very well when I was younger but I think the constant success we had from when I started watching maybe made me take it for granted (I started watching when I was 5 and we were rock bottom and it got consistently better for about 10 years, amazing really). Having seen what's happened since then, it makes you realise quite how amazing it all was.
I started considerably later than you but I'm definitely still in the same boat. My Dad ****ed off when I was about 2, and I was never likely to be randomly taken to football by the mother. I only made 3-4 matches at BP before getting a season pass as soon as we moved to the KC, aged 9. So my first two seasons were two promotions - safe to say it was taken for granted.
I think this perspective is really interesting for the younger City fan. I know you're both knowledgable enough about the past to recognise that you've only seen the good stuff so won't patronise you with the "you don't know how good you've had it" bollocks as you can't control when you were born but it's interesting to think that for you we're now on a downward curve. Probably puts current problems into perspective - it's not that bad really in the grand scheme of things is it? I mentioned earlier on the thread about my old man crying at full time - all he could say to me was "50 years, 50 years" - how long he'd been putting up with mostly ****e for that one single moment in our history. Incredible really - even if we never make the Premier League again, we can all say we were there and, you know what? We did it in ****ing style! 10 years away from going out of existence and being rock bottom of the league we get promoted 'to the promised land' with a screamer of a goal scored by the local boy-done-good. You couldn't make that **** up and that's before you even take into account all the incredible experiences of the next season. It's only by the **** times that we can truly appreciate the good times.
I was in tears before the game with 40,000 City fans singing I cant help falling in love with you coupled with the agonising nerves for the whole 90 minutes and then the stoppage time that felt like they lasted 4 hours not 4 minutesthen that final whistle thousands of grown men in tears, Deano in tears on the pitch not being able t hear myself shout....i'm welling up just thinking about it! A feeling none of us will ever have again, yes making the Premier League again would be great but this day 4 years ago will never ever be beaten for emotion and what it meant to all City fans to have finally made it after all those years!
