Heiðar was born Heiðar Sigurjónsson but changed his name by deed poll to Heiðar Helguson after joining Lillestrøm in honour of his mother, Helga, whose name takes the genitive form 'Helgu'.
H H wasn't born as such, he was pulled out if a stream of molten lava fully formed by the balladeers of Sigur Ros.
He comes from the land of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow. His mum shops at Iceland
So being a BOF, I took the question seriously and asked my mate a Watford supporter and keen heidi fan. This is what he came back with HH is unusual in that he used his mother’s name to create his surname – in Iceland it’s usually the father’s name that is used (cf. Magnus Magnusson) he once scored for Watford against Chelsea in the FA Cup although the ball didn’t cross the line his three kids all have the surname Heidarsson (as in the Icelandic tradition) scored on his first debut for Watford v Liverpool scored two on his second debut for Watford when on loan from QPR (‘I wasn’t having the best of times at QPR when there was a new manager every other week and other **** going on’ – perhaps best not to include the last bit in the eight-year-old’s homework) favourite co-striker in his first spell at Watford was Tommy Smith supported Liverpool as a boy first car was a Subaru Justy Desert Island Woman – Nicole Scherzinger – perhaps best not to include the last bit in the eight-year-old’s homework)
DOB 22/8/77 in Dalvik. Played at all youth levels for the local club UMFS Dalvik, and appeared for the reserves at the age of just 13. Made first team debut at 15 and hit 5 goals in 11 games before getting a transfer to Ãróttur the following year. Heidar has played in Iceland, Poland, Norway, and for Watford, Fulham, Bolton and QPR in England. His overall record is (domestic first team games) 302 games, 164 goals. He has played 55 times at senior level for Iceland, scoring 12 goals. His nickname comes not from his home country, but from his love of the Tom Cruise movie "Top Gun". Coincidentally, he calls Jamie Mackie "Goose" and Djibril Cisse "Jester". Competition for the nickname "Maverick has been intense, however, Joey Barton has threatened to knee anyone who tries to take it off of him. Being born in the north of Iceland, Heidar became quickly accustomed to days and nights lasting six months each, and therefore became disoriented when he arrived in the UK and the sun went on and off every single day. He thought he was hallucinating, until he was taken aside by some of his team-mates and given a bit of a slap.
I'm having a terrible time at the mo. My Mum's just died. This has given me such a laugh. Absolute class. More please. Not from me, I'm not funny enough.. and I'm HILARIOUS by the way.
Heidar was in danger of being typecast as a 'battering ram', and indeed many managers have used him in this way. At QPR, however, Heidar was pleased to see that we actually have keys to every door, and so he's been freed up to play football.
