  1. I was talking to my dad today whilst watching a DVD about the history of Newcastle, and a bit about Tino Asprilla came up, and my dad said that he was the most technically gifted and skillful player ever to wear a toon strip. My dad was a steward for the game against Barca when Tino scored a hatrick, and he said the atmosphere was ****in mental, even more so than the 5-0 win vs Man United. My dad basically thinks that Tino's skill was orgasmic.

Can any of the more experienced Toon fans confirm this? I was only about 3/4 when he was playing so i don't remember lol.

Apparently he could dance circles around Ben Arfa and Tiote, but i think he's just exaggerating.

I'll never forget Tino seemingly hovering in the air like an Eagle with his neck muscles bulging as he smashed a header into the net.

I saw him play at St James, think it was a cup game, just remember him during the warm up, my dad and me just looked on in amazement at his tricks and skills. Frightening ability, cult hero for sure

He was technically brilliant and one aspect I'll always recall about his style of play was the way he ran with the ball and you never knew what he was going to do with it. One unfortunate aspect of that though was his team mates were none the wiser either.

Perhaps it was the rubber legs?

He was deceptively fast and still retained good ball control and had one hell of an eye for goal.

He was no Pedro but he was still a damn good player ;)

I sometimes think that Tino didn't know himself until he did it.

Yeah I still think Beardsley was the most skillful player we've had but tino was an utter legend on his day.

Yep, you've hit the nail on the head there. Scary natural talent, but completely unpredictable. Still one of the best players in a Toon strip that i've ever seen. Complete legend!

I remember his debut against The Smoggies I think, wasn't sure what we'd get from him, he went down left hand side, nutmegged one then flicked it past another to put the cross in, after that I was hooked. I was at the Barca game too, he was awesome. Not sure about our most technically gifted player ever, we've had some quality players over the years but deffo better than anyone in the current squad by miles.

Didn't he skin Man City for fun on his debut. Set up the equaliser. And headbutt Keith Curle. And get sent off for it?

All in a ten minute substitute appearance.

Also I heard that he fired shots at journalists on a few occassions.

Hired a monkey for his son's birthday party. Gave monkey alcohol. Got monkey steaming. And then had to get monkey sedated.

Not to mention his Darlington escapade.

And his services to fur coats.

An absolute lunatic. And my favourite toon player of all time.
