On January 8th 2005 an extraordinary thing happened in Cork. It stopped raining. During a miraculous break in a horrible weather pattern, 100,000 people took to the streets to celebrate the beginning of Cork's tenure as European Capital of Culture. A bunch of spastics and it was like that in Glasgow too and will be in Derry no doubt. The rest of us went to the pub. Culture reading poems on the bus.Glad I haven't been on a bus for about 15 years because I'd still be locked up , if some **** started reading me a poem on a bus
They should just do the City of Culture in nice places, like Barcelona and Amsterdam and that. It's patronising when they put it anywhere else.
Cork. Twinned with Coventry.......I think Coventry must be Danny DeVito. Derry is the first U.K city of Culture. It has annoyed Republicans from some traditions, but mainstream Republicans have largely embraced it in the hope that it shall help the regeneration of the town. The All Ireland Fleadh is coming here too which will be a major boost. **** knows the place needs it.
There is plenty culture here too, just that people have no experience of showcasing culture as a commodity.
I don't know how to answer that without making a joke that you take seriously. I just don't think I could get away with it.
Myself, and many Ardoynians, are against Derry, and more importantly, Marty, championing this. He wants to keep his eye on the next generation rather than ironing his 3 hundred pound suits for the press outings that will come from this. Ps too many commas.
Two too many I think.... But I meant I understand that perspective. I can't say it has been easy for them to embrace it here but once they had, they have really gone for it. Just the "City of Culture" rather than the "UK City of Culture" has been how most people have gotten round it. I don't know how it will play out but at the minute it looks like the arty set are going to be doing a lot of backslapping and there won't be much of a legacy, but what the **** do I know, I'm only a blow in round these parts.
I know Rebs, was taking the piss. What kind of Republican celebrates the UK (which is what is happening) ? The sooner the old guard slip towards the grave with their understandable comprimises the better.
BillyBhoy. Fact of the matter is, it's the U.K City of Culture. That's what the whole city will be celebrating.
I seen Derry in the headline before opening the thread and I thought "1/1000 Medro makes the correction to Londonderry"
