    Swings and roundabouts IMO

Like everything else in life its a cycle. You go through phases.

When younger, go to matches buy the gear etc
then get older family, kids so other priorities, so less games more TV

I would hate to be like that Pompey guy with the tattoos, the memorabilia, at every game but from what I understand lonely

I would also hate to be the guys who call me plastic/gloryhunter etc (not a manc) yet watch ALL UTD matches on illegal streams
and are allowed to comment on sites like this, giving them the 'right' to be everything UTD

couldnt give a toss if a gy is from outer *****lia, some of the foreign supporters/fans are better than some of the locals in my experience

Was a supporter, but didnt buy any merch barring a programme and a scalding hot pie at half time. Not bought a kit in well over 10 years. Probably classed as a fan as I've not been to a game for two years, due to living 4500 miles away (poor excuse I know), but pay to watch the sports channels, which usually show the Utd games.

From those definitions I'd fit closer to being a fan than a supporter but I would call myself a supporter becuase I support my team. Manchester United are my local team, well they were, now I'm closest to Altrincham FC, I went to more games as a kid than I do now and I don't buy the kits anymore, those days are long gone.

My number one priority in life is my wife, after that the rest of my family and friends and then football comes somewhere beyond that. As far as my interests go Manchester United are right up there, I check the news daily and watch all the matches when I can't go. I don't have Sky or ESPN because financially I' prefer to use that money to go on holiday once a year with my wife. I do make the occasional match, maybe one or two a season.

Technically I don't think there's any difference between a fan or a supporter, I think it's just two different ways of saying the same thing. Most people will say "I support Manchester United" or "I'm a Manchester United fan", they both mean the same thing.

What I wouldn't do is try to quantify how much someone supports thier club by the number of matches or merchandise they buy. There are too many variables in peoples lives to do this. A plastic fan might go to loads of games and buy the kit every year until another team becomes more successfull. It's about how much you would follow your club regardless of league position and success. I supported United when Liverpool were winning everything and all we could hope for was a decent cup run. Others will have been United supportes when they were regelageted and continued to be, thats the mark of a true fan/supporter, not paying nearly a grand for a season ticket which is great if you can, but very few actually have the time or money, or buying a shirt because over a certain age it just doesn't go.

Going by your rather blunt criteria im a United Supporter......

    and a city fan.......

    and a Liverpool glory hunter.

I probably spent more money buying city merchandise for birthdays etc than most city "fans" you see these days.

It's quite important, as it at least gives people the reason of supporting a local side which just happens to be very successful. If you've got no links to the club whatsoever and live in Cornwall, Ireland or Timbuktu then it's difficult to say you're not a gloryhunter. If you live in Salford, Bury, Stockport or, better yet, Manchester itself, at least it's a reasonably local side even if you are still gloryhunting.

    Disagree.

Some of the biggest United gloryhunters are from those areas you describe.

The kind who makes no efforts to go to matches but use they fact the live neat OT to feel superior to those who can't go even if they want to.

The kind who don't even know when United are playing or struggle to name 15 players but are the first ones to celebrate success.

Doesn't matter if you live in Irlam or India the only thing that matters is what the club means to you.

Ditto. Except i don't live in Alty and i do have sky. Otherwise perfectly put and is my slant also. How many shirts you buy is quite frankly irrelevant.

What I meant was that if you live somewhere like Salford you can justify choosing United in the first place. Whether you then do something about it is up to you. Of course if you're from Croydon but go to United regularly then you're a 'proper' fan but the actual reason for choosing a successful club that you have no link is to hunt the glory, so you can be a glory hunter that becomes a fan later on.

I really don't think there's any justfication at all for supporting a foreign team.

That's got nothing to do with anything discussed and clearly just you being your pedantic usual self. Most Rangers fans would have wanted Bayern to win as they don't like Chelsea much the same way as fans of many clubs don't like Chelsea for a variety of reasons. I'm sure fans of 1860 Munich or whoever hates Bayern were cheering for you.

It's a shame you care so much about people you don't know congratulating you, as if you had something to do with it. Even if it was a club I had more time for I wouldn't post an arse-licking, congratulatory thread. There is a thread on your board from a QPR fan congratulating your board anyway.

People aren't bitter. They merely don't like Chelsea for a number of reasons. Your desperation for people to say how wonderful your club is is quite odd and your insistence on countless threads about how much bigger and better you are than Spurs suggests you are either very sad or trying to convince yourself that Chelsea are bigger than Spurs which begs the question of why you actually care.

    Artificial nonsense.

What difference does it make? I lived in Manchester and watched the likes of McQueen, Robson, Stapleton, Albiston, Duxbury from the terraces (guess which years this could be?). Now I don't go to matches and I do not purchase any merchandise. Does it make me now a fan instead of a supporter? is this less "valuable"? Are my views less or more than someone who buys merchandise or able to get a ticket?
