Slight bias here? I think my recollection was that we didnt have any shots on goal whereas Shiddy had a few chances. I see your point. I was very disappointed that when we went one down, SAF didnt go all out for that equaliser. He may have been affected by the 1-6 at home but we had nothing to lose. We should have have gone on all out attack. Either we get a draw or lose 5-0. The scoreline wouldn't have mattered. Losing one nil with no shots on goal was pathetic.
Ditto for Chelsea vs Barcelona. Guess it just goes to show that the margins in football are very tight. Better finishing from Bayern and they'd have taken the trophy home. But then again, you could say the same thing about 99. That said, I think it's fair to say that Chelsea, like all Mourinho teams, are masters of the uber defensive one goal win against a superior team. They just have the mentality needed to sit in their own half for most of the game and pose absolutely no threat, and then when they get their chance they often take it. Whereas Utd have almost never played like that under SAF. We just aren't negative enough to defend for 70+ minutes. It's probably the main reason we haven't done better on the continent - you need to be that little bit cynical and completely kill the game off for a sustained period of time. We should've done it against Leverkusen in 2002, Porto in 2004 and Milan in 2007. If we did it more often, we'd get better at it and then be able to do it in big games more often. But then the negative mentality might come back to bite us in league games against teams using the same system - we may find it harder to break them down. We had two shots on target.
