But Di Matteo's objective was totally different. He had to steady a sinking ship and the easiest way of doing that is going back to what they know. Yes Chelsea may have won 2 trophies now (slightly fortunately) but they've done it with the "old gaurd". What happens next season when their best players, Cole, Terry, Lampard, Drogba are another year older? They all need replacing at some point and what AVB was trying to do was gradually phase them out of the team to bring in fresh players. The new manager, be it Di Matteo or someone else, will need to get rid of those players and replace them and then, and only then, can you compare them to AVB. AVB thought he had a 5 year project with Chelsea and was building for the future. Roman wants instance success even if it does mean that in the next few years they may struggle to find and replace the old players.

Yes but the big issue I have with this IBWT is that our current owners seem to be demanding instant success also. I'd be much more willing to have AVB if I thought he'd be guaranteed time. Current trends would suggest he'd get a year to get us top 4 or he's sacked right? If this is not demanded of the manager for next season then why sack Kenny anyway?
I'm not so sure. Hodgson wasn't their appointment and wasn't wanted by the fans - plus the terrible football and results. Kenny was always a stop gap I believe in a similar way to di Matteo. Someone to come in and stop the rot, problem being he did so well they had to offer him a contract. Unfortunately results have been terrible in the league (main priority). I think they are looking for a younger manager to be here for 5 years or so and build a young excting squad (look at the signings they have all ben under 25 bar Bellamy).
I'm not sure they're demanding "instant success". I think they felt there just wasn't enough progress. But none of us know what was said and exactly what the reasons were. It's all just speculation. It's been obvious for months that we weren't going to make fourth so if that was their sole criterion wouldn't they have sacked Kenny earlier?
So how much leeway does he get in his first season or two? Does he get carte blanche to be absoluteley awful while he rebuilds just because he's their man? That's not just aimed at AVB by the way that goes for anyone? I just dread seeing our back 4 defending from the half way line if it is AVB.
If it was as much about how Kenny came across in the media will that improve under AVB? I can only go on what I've seen of the man and his press conferences for Chelsea were excruciating at times. It just doesn't make any sense to me at all.

I don't have the answers, Billy, but a lot of people seem to think they do. I think we just have to be patient and see what happens, frustrating though it is.
