    Spurs fan in pieces.

I live near Swansea, so you've always been my close second team, so I followed the Championship campaigns pretty devoutly, including Mr Rodgers predecessor, Paulo Sousa.

Just thought you'd appreciate the fact that the club he's managing now (Videoton FC, Hungary) finished the league with +35 goal difference, funny how things change eh?

he was a pretty good manager for us and got us higher in the championship than martinez did..he never got any backing at the time otherwise he could have took us up. we were odds on favorite behind the toon for automatic that season overtaking wba .....brendan did eventually get backing after a lengthy board meeting and we got the final push we needed...both martinez and sousa could have got us promoted if they were backed also.....it dont come as a surprise that sousa is doing well......

What up mate ? Why are you in pieces ?

Sousa was okay for us, he got us higher in the table, but he went for a bigger offer at the foxes. No hard feelings for him as he paved the way for Brendan who is a better man manger, and brought us promotion.

I'd be in pieces as well having Champion's League stolen from me by a rival, (not gloating honest) , Sousa was not the worst we've had down here (that list is along one) but there was friction between initially him & the board then the fans which sort of came to it's natural end for all concerned .It's nice to see he's come up with the goods ,he just wasn't for us

The truth is our Chairman and Sousa didn't see eye to eye, so a lot of bad politics got in the way of our season, but despite this Sousa got us to one of our highest positions ever, without a striker, and no support in the January transfer window from Huw Jenkins our chairman. It's true to say that it was not our chairmans finest hour, and the less said about it the better, but it doesn't come as a surprise to me either, that Sousa is doing well, after his season with us, he left us a great defencive unit at the back, before Sousa we where pants at defending, something Martinez struggled with too, I've only a good word for Sousa, though his negative football (What else could he do with Panstado up front) did get to the fans some what!.................. <laugh>

i liked the guy he was a straight talking man and the reason there was friction with the board was because he was not allowed to do his job that was to get us to the premiership when we were so close. fair play to him he gave them an ultimatum of back me or i will walk....he walked...good luck to him..

Rot. Utter rot. Where do you get this drivel from? Our Board has an excellent history of backing managers. Ask Martinez and Rodgers.

Sousa got results no question but god we were awful to watch. It was excruciating watching our striker hanging around in our own half. A team with little attacking intent that was terrified to lose playing largely bore-fest football. Typical Italian stuff from a manager who followed that ethos. The killer was the loss at Ashton Gate where we needed t go for a win but tried to park the bus instead. Terrible display.

That said, it allowed Rodgers to come in an meld the Martinez (we could never defend properly under him) and Sousa philosophies - play the right way, keep it tight at the back, but have players who are happy to get forward and track back when necessary. Sousa was an essential part of our history imo.

Looks like his stay with us was a learning curve for him too. Glad to see he's now got the balance right somewhere else, because he didn't here.

I was at Ashton gate, and boy was Panstado, shocking that game, Van Der Gunn had to show him how to get on the end of a cross into the box! Excruciating, stop exaggerating knackered.................... <laugh>

Yes it was bad. I've agreed with you on the very rare occasions when you talk some sense Dai. <laugh>

"everyone in the world knows why he walked except you"

I'm not sure it was ever made clear was it? If I recall some Board members were less than pleased with our style of play that season (lowest scorers in the division by some margin) and there was pressure put on him to go which ended up being publicly labelled "mutual consent". Perhaps I'm the only person in the world who remembers that, I don't know.

I think it's safe to say he was squeezed out knackered, and Jenkins was the chief architect of that, but Martin Morgan supported Sousa, the thing is, Jenkins started interfering with the managers remit, and making transfer calls, so no wonder Sousa benched Trundle all that season, he didn't even know who Beattie was, and went asking the boys in the dressing room!!.... Like I said not Jenkins finest hour, as one Jack stated:

lts fair to say that our last 4 managers all had something to learn and wernt perfect, they were mostly all taking their first steps and mistakes are a part of that, rodgers has made a few aswell!!

Sousa did well for us and was what was needed, his job remit was to keep us in the leaugue, he did better than that and having to steady the ship after el-judas stole the family silver must have been quite difficult, everyone from Huw Jenkins down to the fans were shell shocked and Sousa took alot of that negative energy, like the guys mentioned above he wasnt perfect but built the right way and i will always respect and thank him for what he did, if he had been given the striker he wanted in January then i beleive we would have won promotion, it was denied by the board and that pretty much sealed our fate that season.

And i was told the exact same thing DPJ. Getting trundle back was a PR exercise to give everyone a boost after judas, beatie wernt signed by sousa he was signed by Jenkins, the guy was on his way to Palace until we offered him an extra 1-2k a week to come to us!! what sousa went through with the board that year was essential to us getting what we needed when brenden came, the board realised they ****ed up by not financially supporting the managers at the right time, and there was a shift in policy that brenden got the benifit of <ok>

Always two sides to a story though, I agree Sousa was basically forced out, but he went very willingly to the foxes. Which he was sacked from after a few months. The guy is hard work and he lost the dressing room, ask Leon or Tate if you don't believe me.

I remember that actually, some players didnt like him either so i was later told. Cant fault his record with us though and thats the bottom line, after judas went i was expecting a relegation dogfight especially as we had 14 players injured at the start of the season!! another left over shambles from martinez that i will never quite forgive!!

with all the things wrong at that time it was a miracle we finished above relelgation let alone just outside the play offs!!

Oh yes, remember that 7th position, last day of the season, and we couldn't beat Bristol if my memory serves me correct, one point in it, and Blackpool with Dobbie!................ <laugh>

    <shudder_smiley>

Lots of opinions here based on rumours though and not much else. We'll probably never know the truth.
