Grant Holt's one of those players who you know what you'll get from him every week, he'll put himself about and he's certainly got a good goal return this year so fair play for that. Should have been given a chance at the Euros IMO, disgrace that he wasn't.

Nonetheless he's hardly an inspiring potential signing.

I'm afraid I agree with Alan Shearer on this one, Grant Holt isn't good enough to play international football.
Frankly, I would pick Peter Crouch, Kevin Davies, Bobby Zamora and Carlton Cole before I got to his name. <ok>

He was good enough to score 15 goals for an average team at the highest level and he deserves his chance. I am one of those people who think that if a player has played well for his club he has earned his place no matter how unfashionable his name is.

You may well turn out to be right and Hodgson may well turn out to be right by picking Carroll over him but it doesn't mean I have to agree with it in principle.

Form is temporary, class is permanent. <ok>

He's 31 and will be too old by the time the next tournament comes around,(yes I know Kevin Davies is even older but he's been playing in the Premier League for 10 years) - international football is another step-up and I just don't think Holt would adjust to it.

You're right, he's had an incredible season, as has John Ruddy for Norwich, it's a strange decision to include Ruddy in the squad if you ask me.

I think picking players of the back of a seasons form is a little pointless as you would never have continuity, something that is absolutely vital at international level.

England have had continuity with Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, Ferdinand and Terry. All they've done is build the hype then fail to deliver.
Cisse wasn't continuity and look what he did.
In a tournament of 6 games or so form has as much to do with it as class or continuity.

I get the argument for continuity, but that also leads to players like Jenas being in squads for seasons just to make up numbers and then never get near the team.
