Guardola when leaving Barcelona said he that he would like to stay away from football management for one year. Now, Liverpool owners have approached him and to see if they can change his mind.Former England manager Fabio Capello is also being considered: I do not personally think Fabio Capello is suitable for Liverpool. I think Capello would be a great manager for us. Proven success at pretty much every club he's been at (domestically!). However, I think the owners are after someone younger so that pretty much rules him out. I think if we do get Txiki in as DoF, then I think it could be a 'stronger' possibility. I still see Pep as an honourable man and I think he wouldn't leave his favourite team/hometown after telling them he needed a break, only to join LFC lol.
I think it is possible. Managers are not so keen to jump straight to clubs in Europe. They seem happy to build clubs, as long as the owners are ambitious etc. Especially young managers. A manager has the chance to make history with us.
I also agree with that... This statement is the bit that makes me think Mourinho would be tempted. I don't think he will join us though.
Had we kept Kenny for another year then that would have given us time to sweet talk Pep not a cat in hells chance. Pure hot air...bit like when the Venkys said they'd get Ronaldinho etc
Guardiola and Capello have been resistant to the idea. Pep did praise our academy as up there with Barca's but I don't see him taking the job yet. And if he thinks he's burnt out we should take note. But I think he'd identify with a club like Liverpool, provided we're not in the process of selling our soul to sell shirts. If that happens we might as well let Mourinho call us one of His Houses, like we're a ventriloquist's dummy used to get the spotlight then thrown in a suitcase while he goes off to take all the credit. Capello loves the London art scene so wants the Chelsea job. I thought AVB tried to do at Chelsea what Kenny did here - Kenny used the older players like Kuyt and Maxi to get the form of 2nd last season (like batting in the upper .400s, FSG) but they took a back seat to allow youngsters to get games this season. It was prep work which had to be done, if not this season then next. Chelsea bottled it, though it's not surprising because AVB wasn't doing nearly as good a job as Kenny at it. RDM went back to the old guard but now Chelsea have the work to do next season that Kenny had already done. I still don't get why FSG would go from Kenny to AVB. It makes no sense to me but then in the US they're more forgiving of people who have been sacked if they haven't sacked them. Martinez would be Rafa Lite. But I do like the guy as the only PL manager who ever stuck up for Rafa against the hounding he got from the media.
Sorry but I can't stand knocking Capello.. Find a manager (who has not retired) who has performed better than him on ANY stage. Also let's talk about his international record. Let's compare him with every English Manager in the last 40 years. Now let's look at the win percentage! Who has the highest win percentage? Oh CAPELLO. Statistically he was the best English manager we had in 40 years! (look at facts and results) Also his domesic record is sublime. He is argubly the best manager in the world. And I am not wumming... Care to disagree? I know this may raise a few eyebrows.
I agree with the this bit. There is no way you will get me to take notice with win percentages, especially with England. Rarely did we have to play so many games against such weak opposition in the past so it is an unfair rating to the older manager. I know the saying is 'you can only beat whats in front of you' but it just does not stack up fairly for the managers prior to 1990 (probably being generous there too). Although i agree he is a very good manager, he style of play is of concern to me. plus, of course, his age, will he be a long term solution? Especially considering Capello's own comments about 'one last fling with an English club'. That doesn't suggest he plans on spending five or more years at a club.
As a player: Roma - Coppa Italia (1): 1968–69 Juventus - Serie A (3): 1971–72, 1972–73, 1974–75 Milan - Serie A (1): 1978–79, Coppa Italia (1): 1976–77 As a coach: Milan - Serie A (4): 1991–92, 1992–93, 1993–94, 1995–96, Supercoppa Italiana (3): 1992, 1993, 1994, UEFA Champions League (1): 1993–94, European Super Cup (1): 1994, Coppa Italia Primavera (1): 1984–85 Roma - Serie A (1): 2000–01, Supercoppa Italiana (1): 2001 Juventus - Serie A (2): 2004–05, 2005–06 (both revoked) Real Madrid - La Liga (2): 1996–97, 2006–07 His World Cup qualifiers were good but he was too resistant to change in the WC when it was obviously going wrong. This is common in managers, who don't want the media and fans telling them how to manage, no matter how obvious it is that Gerrard shouldn't be on the left. I dunno if his international record is as good as Sven's but at club level he's got the chops.
Your post seems way out of context to my original statement! I am not saying Capello is **** or his record does not compare well to other England managers. I am saying based on what seems to be FSG's criteria he is too old; Capello is not the long term solution anymore than Kenny was and I honestly do not think he would be any better than Kenny on limited funds. I agree that Capello has received undue stick but unfortunately thats par the course in the England job; I have sympathy for any England manager to be honest because to me at least the job is to pick the players who are most attractive from a marketing perspective rather than ability, future goals or class.
Statistically, Capello has the best win ratio of any England Manager. As you say, his record at domestic level is nothing short of incredible. He won La Liga with Madrid and was sacked!
