I will say it again - he can be a tyre fitter again to boost his pension. Why should he retire at 35? He is very fortunate to have a trade under his belt that he can turn to if he needs to, most footballers do not have that luxury. To retire at 35 is down to pure greed and selfishness in his case.

I agree to a certain extent but he has 2 more years on his contract so that would be at least another million. You can live very comfortably on 2 million plus I'm sure.

I have been in business for 35 years, some years have been good others not so good.In the eighties I made good money but I doubt ever in excess of £60k p.a. in todays values. Now I am not exactly rich but I could retire and have enough.I suppose that depends what your definition of "enough" is and how much you pissed up the wall.

All of us want to be paid the going rate for the job we do, don't we? Just because somebody else earns less than me doesn't mean I shouldn't want to be paid what my work is worth.
It's almost as though he should say 'because you signed me in league one, I won't ask for a better deal or a longer contract'.
I can't agree with the transfer request going in, but Holt is totally entitled to ask for the best deal he can get for him and his family.
Beyond that, McNally will do what's best for the club.

Funnily enough I doubt the people who are saying 'my heart bleeds' etc wouldn't do the same in his position.

Fair enough he has a trade to fall back on - but why should he? He has an opportunity to retire at 35, a dream for most people but a realistic possibility for him. I'm sure anyone on this site would rather retire at 35 than return to tyre fitting. Selfish? Greed? No it isn't. It's sensible..it's common sense. Footballers get a lot of stick for moving clubs for bigger wages etc..but they don't grow up supporting this club like we do. They play for love of the game/money. The wages they earn are obscene but that's irrelevant we can't change that. If you were employed by a company and were approached by a different company offering to double your salary meaning you could retire at a young age - wouldn't you do it?

I am sure I would but from what can be gleaned from what sources we have, this is not a case of anyone offering more money. He is engineering this himself, or maybe his agent is doing this or put the idea in to Grants head.

I imagine it has a lot to do with his agent but all I'm saying is I can sympathise with his position.......almost ;-)

I think that's a bit harsh. Holt will have earned fvck all earlier in his career. He's only been on £15k per week in the last year. I would guess that he wouldn't be on more than 1k a week at Shrewsbury, if that. When you consider that the guy is uniquely talented, which sounds strange but of all the footballers that try and make it, how many actually succeed? There are only a few hundred professional footballers- he is the equivalent of one of the very best plumbers, or carpenters. They can earn loads. The difference is they can earn loads for 40 odd years, he can only do it for, at most, five years. It's a very lucky footballer that manages to earn massive for 15 years. He needs to maximise his earnings on the one career which he is very very good at right now.

Something odd is going on here.

Holt has just spent loads of cash having his house extended and re-furbished and has 2 years to go on his contract and was happy up till 2-3 days ago. Something serious must have happened that caused him to do this.

I don't know what has happened but he seemed totally settled here with his 3 little girls and their schooling and investing cash into his family home.

    What on earth has happened?

Just need to wait for David to say his bit. That is what we desperately need now, is some information from the club. They seem to have been a little slow in coming forward but I guess they have their reasons.

i think it took the club by surprise too! plus, the board members were at the cricket yesterday so hadn't been around to get their input in place.

It can happen people just get used to certain standard of living, the obvious things holidays staying in expensive hotels, clothes and purchases for the house but it can be silly things too like what supermarket you shop at, if your drinking champagne instead of Cava or Prosecco, going to top range restaurants instead of your normal range ones it all adds up.

If I was a footballer I'd invest in property like Robbie Fowler does which actually reminds Grant Holt either built a house or had some major work done because a little while ago on twitter all he could talk about was the new house and builders. I know you can just sell a house but if you build a house it's usually for a special reason in my opinion.

Think McNally needs a new watch. After all this he will probably say nothing.
