This rather contradicts what was said at the time about the deal, which saw the Ghanaian join Al Ain in the UAE on a year-long loan that cost his new club £6m.

Gyan (pictured right) was reported to have said in an interview this week that there was no chance of him moving back to Sunderland and, indeed, the club felt that they were within a day or two of ridding themselves of the striker at the weekend.

But he now seems to be trying to make peace and build some bridges with the club that still owns his registration – even if the only thing Martin O’Neill wants from the 2010 African Player of the Year is the fee that boosts his summer transfer budget. Gyan said: “My agent called me about the interview. They said I didn’t want to go back to Sunderland and I don’t like it there.

“But the team was good for me. I love the fans and I love the club. They bought me for £13 million and they did a lot for my career. When I left there the fans were very good to me.

“I didn’t have any negative feelings towards anybody. In football you need to move sometimes.

“I left Sunderland in peace. When Al Ain made an offer, they accepted it and I had to move. I had no choice but to move. I had no trouble with anybody at Sunderland but that is life in football.”

This feeling that Gyan was forced into the move will stun Sunderland, and in particular former manager Bruce who could not get his head around why a player he spent so much money and time on would choose to leave England for the desert. At the time of the loan deal going through, Bruce said: “Forty eight hours ago I had him in my office and said, this [speculation about a move] has gone on too long. He shook me by the hand and said ‘I want to remain here and be a Sunderland player’ and then within 48 hours he has manufactured a move to the United Arab Emirates.

“I will leave people to make their own conclusions about that but it baffles me how he can leave the best league in the world to go and play on the other side of the world.

“No disrespect to Abu Dhabi or wherever he has gone, but I find it really baffling.”

Gyan, 26, has won the UAE League title in his first season with the club and insists several European clubs have expressed an interest in signing him. Although Sunderland would prefer him to stay at Al Ain as they would be willing to meet their asking price of £6m, something that may scare off other clubs who are not so oil-rich.

Gyan said: “I’m very happy since I came here. Everything seems to be perfect.

“Definitely if you go somewhere and everything there is perfect you want to stay but we are still in negotiations and we will have to wait and see.

“I could go anywhere, and I’m ready to go anywhere and I need to make the right decision. I think any decision I make I think has to be the right decision for me, not for the people.”

Slightly less believable is Gyan’s claim that there is not too much difference between the UAE and English football. He said: “I’d say the Premier League is the top in the world and I do respect that. I’ve tasted it before, I know the difference.

“Talking about the UAE league I’d say the slight difference is the atmosphere, the fans shouting, pushing their players to go higher, that’s the only thing I don’t see that here but in terms of football I see the same thing.”

He's just doing to the arab club what he done to us, he's trying to engineer a move from them now.

    Journey-man springs to mind.

I dont despise him, I would like the club to come out and say what really happened, Gyan is the only one making any noise here, and its all, I did not want to go, the club said yes, so I didnt have a choice, but according to Bruce they didnt, so its one side against the other, as far as i know, no one from the Club apart from Bruce has said anything at all about what happened.

Either Gyan is Lying, Bruce is Lying or the club pulled the rug away from Bruce and agreed to the loan without Bruces consent, (or something else).

I don't believe a word of what Gyan says! It was there for all to see how he didn't try at the start of last season. He just wasn't arsed. Now he may have been ahead of us in realising how **** Bruce was but his lack of effort was criminal. Good riddance.
