In Oz, some hardware stores have the Meths on display along with the orange juice, right next to the front door. Stops the indigenous locals from having to come too far into the store - they can nick it from the doorway. Enjoy the break Charlie - could do with a bit of warmth myself, so am a tad jealous.
Glad you're enjoying it, BB. Typing this is another way of putting off the moment when I get back to editing book 2. There are actually three novels about Winfrith but I am doing a fairly substantial rewrite of books 2 and 3. The second book is about 10% done so it will be another 4/6 months before I put it on Kindle, depending on the number of distraction of course... Now you've mentioned the name I'll look up Shona MacLean and see what sort of thing she writes.
I'm getting a little lost here so I'll try summing up. A man, now called Shona MacLean having had the operation, is a Cypriot Aussie drunk on Meths enters a Bar. He orders a glass of water (me thinks it's so he can wash down his/her purple hearts) on seeing him/her taking the pills Winfrith the Turkish Barman produces a gun/shotgun and fires off a round. Now being as the Turk is cross eyed he fires at the wrong Cyp image in front of him thus missing the real Crypriot, Shona, the wind from the bullet causes her hair to be blown about into a different style. She then leaves a tip because we know that ladies always leave a tip for their hairdresser. Simples
I think you missed a bit there Charlie. Shona was scratching his/her head at the time, wondering why Winfrith had suddenly pulled a shotgun on him/her - and the bullet actually hit his/her hand, blowing off part of a finger. The tip that he/she left was therefore his/her fingertip. So we can now deduce that, as a bullet was involved, the offensive weapon wasn't actually a shotgun.
AAH!! I see now so it wasn't a drinks bar that Shona was entering it was a Nail Bar and the water was to soften his/her cuticles.
do we ever get to find out the answer? lol (though i think the posts are probably better than the answer to be honest lol)
The man is a hunter - it is a small town so the bartender also owns the local gunshop and the firing is a demonstration that the gun works. The water is for the man's hunting dog and the "tip" is payment for the gun.
cheers Theo will get it as soon as I finish Zen and the art of Motorcycle maintenance which is a good philosphy book and makes you think ,especially since it was written in the 70`s
I've just put this problem to youngest and he thinks that the shot was fired at someone behind the man who was about to kill him, which is why there was the thank you and the tip. Not sure about the water, though.
I'm enjoying your book too. theo. The only problem I have is getting my Kindle app to work on my phone. I am really pleased your book doesn't involved homocidal Turkish barmen shooting transgender individuals with bad nails. Of course we haven't got to the bit where the forensic scientists have analysed what is under those nails, which should give us a clue to what is going on.
I think the man who walked into the bar hit his head on the bar, and had a dream of asking a bartentender for water and nearly being shot at, whilst unconcious
But if he gave the tip in his dream How does the person asking the original question (ie Dan ) know about it ?
