That is the only time i've seen him live yes, but every time i watched him for norwich last season he looked useless. One moment that sticks out in my mind is the stupid penalty he conceded against Wigan. I may be wrong, but wasn't he sent back to Utd from Norwich because he was rubbish.

He was injured for much of the first half of his loan, so they decided not to bother with the second half..

He was sent back due to injury and seeing as he only played 6 games for Norwich it's hardly fair to judge him on that. He's quick and can play anywhere accross the back line which should prove very useful. Not so sure about James, highly rated but has had a nasty injury and been out for a while. £1m seems a lot but time will tell whether he's worth it.

Okay so i was wrong. Still, I don't think he'll be anywhere near as good as Chester

To be fair, being **** at Man Utd doesn't mean he'll be **** in the Championship. Older than I thought he was though.

I'm actually beginning to wonder whether Walsh is that good at the job of discovering players though. It doesn't take a genius to work out that signing the better players from top clubs' reserve teams is generally going to be a good thing for lower league sides to do, and beyond that what did they actually sign for us?

GKs - Basso (known at this level), Mannone (top club), Gulacsi (poor despite being from a top club)
Def - Rosenior (known at this level), Ayala (top club), Hobbs (worked with him before, originally signed from a top club), Chester (top club), Gerrard is about the only one that's got some credit for discovery.
Mid - Koren (known at PL level never mind this), Evans (top club), Stewart (top club), Brady (top club), McKenna (proven at this level), and Harper who's crap.
For - Fryatt (worked with him before, Simpson (top club and had had a good loan spell with QPR), and McLean and Adebola have hardly set the world alight.

They only signed four players where it required any real thought be put into it, and 3 of those were cack, certainly in terms of value for money. He's maybe worth having for contacts, but in terms of discovery I don't see how much he actually does.

They might be very good players, but I don't see De Laet being a patch on Chester.

Just looking forward to having our new manager in situ, then we'll find out who 'our signings' are.

As much as I appreciate the point Ricardo, it can't be the easiest thing in the world to judge (From watching Man Utd Reserves vs WBA Reserves or whatever) whether or not a player is good enough to survive at Championship level, never mind set it alight.

I know quite a few Utd fans & most will say he's ****e! However this is because of a few things. He's left, or he played ****e in Carling Cup.

Up to £1.7m for a non league player? ****ing hell, makes McClean look cheap. I can see this ending in tears for flat top!

He only scored 4 more goals than Liam Hearn at Grimsby, and Hearn was in a ****ter team that scored and created a lot less chances.

IMO, Colin is welcome to them. Not an improvement on what we have, imo. Colin is taking a few off Pompey apparantly (Norris is another) so TWS could well be in for a relegation fight next season.

This smacks of desperation to me. Can you immagine the hassle that the Allams would get if they spent anywhere near the reporte dfee on a non-league footballer ?

I agree that this deal could well make or break NP time @ Lesta. £1.7m for a non-league player ffs, Insperation or desperation ? TWT.

Indeed. I bet Grimsby would accept £500k for Hearn and a couple more of our kids for the season. imo.

If they end up paying the full £1.7M then it means he's been successful for them. If he isn't successful for them then they've wasted less signing a 25 year old than we did signing an older McLean.
