It has been revealed today that 99.995% of all football transfer gossip is made up on the spot by editors hoping to boost their newspaper's circulation in the close season. Not only did they admit to making a lot of it up but that they often posted it to help friends who were football agents to promote their player in the market place or as a ploy to get an improved contract for the player at his existing club. The editors as a whole agreed that football fans were so gulluble (I was going to correct this typo as the u and the i are adjacent to each other on the keyboard but then I thought why spoil the pedant's fun) that were nearly always taken in by the stories and would discuss the fictional transfers for endless hours on Internet Message Boards where threads would often extend for dozens of pages and all of it laughable nonsence. One editor came clean and said the one thing I am astonished about is the fans at Southampton. They know that nobody has an inkling of whom their Chairman Nicola Cortese will sign and that all is only revealed once the signing is complete yet they have threads that go on and on prattling about absolute rubbish and nonsense about this player and that player. They might as well just put some relaxing music on the CD player and sit back with their fabvourite tipple, chill out and wait until their glorious chairman says "Look who I've signed guys. What do you think?" and they will all go wow who would have ever thought that! And yet tomorrow when the Daily Mail publishes the name of the 43rd player Saints are supposed to sign this week they go into raptures and swallow the whole fictional story hook line and sinker. As you can guess I detest transfer speculation and people pretending to be in the know as to who we will sign. It is all a waste of energy, time and brain power.
I know what you're saying but I heard it straight from a bloke down the pub who heard it from a very reliable source!
I think it's disgusting that these so-called editors of those rags could print such defamatory stuff. To suggest that we Southampton fans could be so gullible to believe everything we read is a disgrace. Give me the names of their papers and I will write a complaint
Ooooh, a new signing to be announced in the Mail tomorrow? Jenkins saddle the horses and get me to the papershop :-D
Literally nothing new with editors making up transfers. They have a lot of space to fill, and sometimes not a lot of news to fill it in. Yes, it is annoying seeing us linked with random players who i'm sure we aren't actually looking at, but that's how it is. It makes for good conversations.
I prefer this than to our best players been linked to every other club. Is nice, its peaceful, its fun. Let Nige decide before you get stressed.
Well it seems that the bit about gullible fans was right Actually you may not know, but 95% of the transfer rumours are created by a freelance sports journalist who then shares then between the various papers. My Aunt knows his neighbour. His name is Phil Space. Fact.
For goodness sake.......show me a football site that is not full of rumour in the close season!! Most of the discussion centres not that we have bought players, but that we have been linked to a player. The discussion then is about how this or that player is likely to fit in. Yes we do have our magical spies that are constantly telling us they have seen that or this player at the airport or down at St Mary's. Shall we say our wishful thinkers. So why have we been singled out? As others have said godders.......if the title of the thread is not to your taste...then don't taste it. Simples.............
