WHITBY Town are to take on Premier League Sunderland in the pick of their pre-season friendlies announced this week. The Black Cats, who enjoyed a resurgence in league form when Martin OâNeill took over last season, will arrive at the Turnbull on Wednesday 18 July. Whitby will also entertain east coast rivals Scarborough Athletic and Championship side Middlesbrough in one of the most exciting pre-season programmes for years. Boss Darren Williams, a former Black Cats player, was instrumental in helping to bring his old side to Whitby and said he was keen for Whitby to play footballing sides rather than ones âthat kick seven bells out of you.â He is expecting Sunderland to bring a reserve side with players on the fringes of the Premier League and is expecting supporters of the Black Cats to swell the gate by enjoying an evening out on the Yorkshire coast. He said: âIt gives you that incentive to go out and do well and put yourself up against players who will possibly be appearing the Premier League next season. âWe will work hard, make sure we match them as best we can and make a good account of ourselves. âItâs not about the results, itâs about us playing well and playing the style of football we want to play next season. âWe want to see the lads perform against better quality opposition.â Williams said the prestigious fixtures were bound to attract good crowds as well as some early season revenue for the club. News of the fixtures was welcomed by fans on the Whitby Town website. âCouldnât ask for a better line-up, well done whoever organised these,â said Loftus Blue. Oxford Blues said: âThat is what a pre-season should be for each and every non-league club. âIt has been ages since the big boys turned up to lend support to the smaller team.â Fezza added: âGreat news these games â hopefully get a good turnout and some much-needed cash built up for the start of the season and bad weather playing its part. âWill also be a good test of how much the boys have improved ................................................................................................. Should be a good day out, easy to get to if your local to Sunderland, tough **** Commachio, Monsmush etc etc. decent beer, a match to go to out of season, and great fish and chips. must be good Dracula started off there. http://www.whitbygazette.co.uk/sport/football/blues-host-premier-league-sunderland-1-4554053

A SUNDERLAND XI will face non-league Whitby Town – managed by former Black Cat Darren Williams – in a pre-season friendly. The Wearsiders side, expected to be made up of reserve team players, will tackle the Evo-Stik Premier outfit on Wednesday, July 18 (kick-off 7.45pm). Ex-Sunderland promotion hero Williams has been player-manager of the Blues since October and is delighted at the prospect of facing his former club. Williams said: “It gives you that incentive to go out and do well and put yourself up against players who will possibly be appearing the Premier League next season. “We will work hard, make sure we match them as best we can and make a good account of ourselves.” Sunderland’s second string will also face another non-league side, Newton Aycliffe, on Friday, July 20.
My mate plays for Whitby, might tie in a weekend home with this! EDIT* He's signed for Scarborough Athletic!
as i said before do we normally take many down to these kind of games... will i be able to get myself a ticket because the ground is tiny...
I'd imagine a canny squad would make that journey mate, not only is it local, but it's a nice place to visit, good food and bars. I'd imagine the place would be full.
Will be published on SAFC website, as and when tickets are on sale, but I dont expect a mad rush on this one.
