Former England striker Teddy Sheringham has urged Roy Hodgson to name Bobby Zamora in his Euro 2012 squad with a view to the QPR star spearheading Englandâs attack in Ukraine and Poland. The new England manager names his squad this Wednesday with the make-up of his strikeforce highly up for debate given Wayne Rooney's two-match suspension and Darren Bent's injury. Zamora has just two England caps, with his last coming in the 1-0 win over Sweden last November, and the 31-year-old has struggled in the Premier League this term. This season he has scored nine goals in all competitions, but just twice since moving to QPR from west London rivals Fulham for £6million in January â where he was signed by Hodgson in 2008 before enjoying two seasons under his guidance. But Sheringham believes Zamoraâs playing style offers much to England going into the tournament and is confident his ex-West Ham team-mate can help lead Englandâs attack. âWhen you play in a major competition itâs like playing away from home,â said Sheringham. âItâs the same for most sides of course, but that is the feel you get of the game â you are not playing a home game. Struggling for form: Zamora has scored just twice for QPR âSo if youâre picking strikers youâve got to have people who can hold the ball up in the opposition half and for me the best player that can do that is Bobby Zamora. âI know he has not had the best end of the seasons but he does an Emile Heskey-type job for England - and he can score goals as well. âHe is good in the air and he is very capable playing in an England team and would be good alongside Wayne Rooney in the latter stages. Roy Hodgson would know how to get the best out of him too.â Sheringham, who scored 11 goals in 50 international games between 1993 and 2002, also claimed that Englandâs chances of success in Poland and Ukraine this summer have been greatly improved by the arrival of Hodgson. Amazes me. if true it's hard to see England going far, but then it is hard to see England going far. Full Stop. I thought England had a problem with injured and racist CD's - Clint would get the back 4 organised and provide a bedrock at the heart of our defense.
He had me all the way up to his comment about Zamora doing a 'Heskey-type' job. Surely if you want someone to run about aimlessly, shoot fifteen feet over the bar, then fall over, you take Ashley Young?
Bobby would do a better job than Welbeck surely? I would take him but sadly I dont think he will get a look in.
Perhaps Sherringham has heard that old crowd favourite to the tune of 'That's Amore'........... "When you're sat in row Z, and the ball hits your head..................that's Zamora"!
If you picked potential England strikers alpabetically then I reckon Zamora is in the right position. Over-rated, overpaid and underperformed. End of.
Honestly, I believe Clint Hill could do a good job in the England team. He'll never get in the team, though.
Does this mean England will be going with the usual 4-4-2 direct approach? It may well be the best option. We (IRL) will have Kevin Doyle leading the line and fulfilling a similar role and he's been quite sh*t in the league this year. These target men can do a job for our type's of International sides but ideally you'd like someone who could occasionally score. Heskey, Doyle and Zamora rarely do but Holt might be able to find the net. Is Crouch in the frame? He's always scored for England hasn't he?
Ståle Solbakken think he's called. He played in England years ago with Wimbledon I think. Played for Norway. Midfield player that ran a lot with his elbows sticking out like Pippi Longstocking! He collapsed on a training field in Copenhagen, heart, and quit playing. As manager, he took Copengagen to the quarters I think it was in the CL where they got knocked out by Barca, and he had some verbals with Guardiola. He's looks like a pale version of Guadiola - no hair! He was lined up as the Norway national teams new manager, but tore that agreement up to go manage Cologne, more money no doubt. That action kinda confirmed the impression I always got of him that he is a big headed pr*ck, and definetely a traitor to his country. Cologne sacked him a few weeks back when they were staring relegation - Cologne is where Podowski played this season, and I believe there were a few issues between them. Still he probably is agood manager, but I think Wolves are taking a huge risk, he has no Managerial experience of England, and how he will fare competing with the likes of Colin will be interesting. Hope this helps, its all from a very bad memory so probaly full of b*ll*ks!!!
Finally someone actually gets it! I'd pick: 1) Rooney 2) Crouch (his record is the reason) 3) Holt (reward good form all season as 2nd top english scorer in premier league) 4) ??? Personally, I'd take Defoe (he offers something different to the other 3) Carroll (dire performances all season apart from the last few games, this tosser might sneak in because of big club bias, but we all know he doesn't deserve it) Zamora (hasn't performed this season, sorry as he is your player now, but he will start scoring goals again and come into contention next season) Bent (if uninjured then theoretically could be called up, but has never really performed for england) Frazier Campbell (surely not? one appearance and maybe another in the future, but not this summer) --- If it was my choice, I'd play Crouch up front with Rooney just behind like he does at Man Utd, then in 2nd half, bring on Holt as a substitute (should need arise for physical battle) or Defoe (should need arise for more pace). I feel this would be the correct balance.
