QPR star reduced to tears by Manchester City drama Ian Cooper Tuesday, May 15, 2012 10:00 AM Jamie Mackie was reduced to tears by QPRâs nerve-shredding final-day defeat to Manchester City â and insists the Rs should have taken something from the game. Mackieâs diving header gave his side a stunning 2-1 lead against Roberto Manciniâs team, as a spell-binding match affected the fortunes of teams at the top and bottom of the table. Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero scored the injury-time goals which sealed Cityâs first title for 44 years, although Rangers avoided the drop thanks to Boltonâs failure to beat Stoke. Mackie admits he has never been involved in a match like it, and his only regret is that QPR failed to hold on to the lead they worked so hard to earn. âIâm a bit gutted that we didnât spoil the party because I really did feel that we deserved a point,â said Mackie. âHowever, all that matters is us being in the Premier League. âI think I cried when I scored! It was the most emotional game Iâve played in, it means so much for me. I love QPR for giving me the chance and I want to stay here and be part of great things. Four years ago I was playing in the Conference, and to be able to have a say in the Premier League title is unbelievable for me.â Mackie sang the praises of Armand Traore, whose pin-point cross game him the chance to plant a header past Joe Hart. âTraoreâs got great pace, and I knew as soon as he had the touch that he was going to deliver the ball,â added Mackie. âHeâs got good quality when he gets in those positions so I thought Iâd gamble. âYou can either buy a ticket and see what happens, or you stay on the halfway line and watch the cross go to the back stick. My nature, being a forward, I got up there. As soon as I get chances like that Iâm very happy that Iâm going to score goals.â
He was fantastic this season. It's probably been said before but it surprised me how he, Hill, Helgusson and Derry were so influential I thought they'd be bit part at most. I sure wish we had more who would play with the passion Mackie talks of here.
Great season from Jamie. Looking forward to seeing how he improves next year - a great opportunity for him. He has real self drive, so I'm sure that things will keep improving for him. He deserves it. Cheers Jamie!
Freely admit to having huge doubts about whether Jamie has the quality for this level. Delighted that he has proven me wrong - he knows his strengths, plays to them and has epitomized the spirit this year. I think he's Sparky's kind of player too. Hell be around unless Mittal really opens the bank vault..
Mackie has already said that he wants to stay at Rangers. Everton and West Ham are enquiring about him but he's not interested. He is quoted as saying that he owes it to QPR for giving him his chance. Four years ago I was playing non-league football. I could only dream of a season like this in the Premiership back then. As long as QPR want me I will stay. Not word for word, but very similar.
Music to my ears hearing a modern player speak with such appreciation for our club like young Jamie. What he lacks in finess, he makes up for in so many other ways. Rangers ledge for sure.
