Odds reduce on something if a disproportionate number of people back it.

England will always be shorter odds than they deserve as a lot of people will back them at every tournament.

I think the relative lack of hype around the England squad could go in their favour this time - normally, we'd have heard about how they were a shoe-in by now and that doesn't seem to be happening with the new manager and personnel issues (Terry & Rio) hogging the news.

I'm still tipping the Germans, though <ok>

My father was a Scot Trev, he hated anyone south of the border. As far as he was concerned, they were just bloody sassenachs. <laugh>

At 11/1 I'll be putting all my spare cash on England and would advise my fellow Brits to do the same.

My money's on Germany. At the moment, I'm reading 'Why England Lose: And other curious phenomena explained' by Simon Kuper. His conclusion is that England, far from underachieving, consistently perform at a level slightly above what you'd statistically expect.

No. We disbanded our national team a while back, disdaining the quasi-military undertones of nations competing against each other. We could easily win such a thing at a canter if we wanted to, obviously, but prefer sitting on the sidelines shaking our heads ruefully at the needy, vulgar little show-offs who take such competitions seriously.

<laugh> 1966 for Christ sake. That's hardly an endorsement for English football. How long ago was that?

I don't see how when they haven't won anything for nearly 50 years.

When you consider the likes of Czechoslovakia, Denmark and Greece have won the European Championship and Spain, France and Italy (similar populations to England) have all won World Cups recently I would have thought that England have consistently underachieved.

They don't base their calculation purely on population, though it is a factor.
