Derry admits he feared the worst as Rangers suffered defeat to title-winners Manchester City on Sunday

Shaun Derry admits he feared QPR were relegated when Sergio Aguero grabbed his 95th-minute title-winner for Manchester City yesterday.

Aguero’s last-gasp strike left Rangers desperate for news from Stoke City’s Britannia Stadium, where a win for Bolton Wanderers would have kept them up and sent the Rs down.

But with Wanderers managing only a 2-2 draw, Mark Hughes’s side survived by a single point, and Derry hailed his team-mates’ exertions despite their nail-biting 3-2 defeat at the Etihad.

“It was unbelievable. It was surreal out there in the second half,” said Derry. “To play in it was probably easier than watching it from the sidelines. When that third goal went in I wasn’t sure what was happening at Stoke, I thought we had really messed it up.

“I thought we were down. I was engulfed in the game but I glanced over to our fans. I knew at half-time Bolton were winning and we would’ve been down and out.

“I was devastated but looked up and saw the QPR fans celebrating. I’m so proud of the boys. It was an incredible performance from the boys, especially when you consider what it was all about.

“This is up there. It’s as important as winning promotion. The celebrations are different because it’s hard to celebrate when you’ve survived by one or two points.

“We never lost heart. I’ve been in the game a long time and I’ve seen ups and downs at different levels. Thankfully we’re all laughing now.

“We had a game plan to sit back and defend and it worked a treat. We conceded just before half-time, which was a bit of a low point. But the longer it went on the more chance we had of getting something from the game.”

That probably explains why he was the only player lunging to block aguero's shot.

Wasn't it Derry who didn't realise Adel had got sent off for a second yellow recently and therefore that the team were playing with 10 men?

Puts a counter on the inevitable speculation that we gave up as soon as news of Bolton's relegation came through.

Yeah but it's nice to think we lost concentration due the Bolton result rather than just lost !!

I've spoken to quite a few of my mates and people I know, who support various teams in the football league...They reckon the R's threw the game once they
knew they were safe, to stop manu from wining the title...Can't see it myself, but who knows what goes on.

That's definitely untrue although there is a chance we eased up which is reprehensible in itself.

Jay Bothroyd has had a go at United fans accusing QPR of losing them the title.

Well...just watch Onuha for Dzecko's header.....he didnt even bother jumping....he just let him jump and score.

I get the feeling that if Bolton had won then the result may have been different....but who knows.

I don't know, I couldn't see Anton being party to deliberately throwing the game when his own brother is captain of ManU, but this is one of those instances where it is more attractive for neutrals and consp theorists to believe that was the case; if Stoke had lost, many of us would have been convinced that they threw the game too. I prefer to believe that what happened in both games reflected what went on on the pitch, not in smoke filled rooms.

Well its purely guess work.....if it was the case, it would be more likely that our players switched off somewhat after hearing the news, over thinking "hey, lets hand them the trophy!"

I really hope that's untrue but its correct in saying that the defending for the corner was pub league. He got a free header from 5 yards.

That's not much better though is it? Its thoroughly unprofessional just like the limp wristed attempts against Leeds this time last year.

    Not good enough.

Didnt say it was much better.....but clearly after 45 minutes of solid defending, something changed after the Stoke game was up and we shipped 2 goals in 2 minutes.

It would have gone down in QPR history if we had won that game.....allthough a side affect would have been handing Man Utd the title.

im just glad we are up and we can build a decent team for next season.

Spot on Frankster. I'm honestly at a loss to understand the mentality of some of the people on here.

I'm not sure why you bother supporting QPR Swords!!
All you do is run them down.....this is infecting every thread. I can't imagine any other team's board would be so full of arguments after pulling off such a great escape!!
