I think a lot of adverts seem to be particularly naff, cash for gold adverts, confused.com and who can forget GoCompare. But... I loved Carlsberg's World Cup advert with all the famous sporting faces, and here is there new one for Euro2012: Absolutely brilliant. Brian Blessed with the fans cracked me up. Thoughts? Any other favourite adverts also?
A couple of my favourites: Honda - Impossible Dream http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP5S9aZ9HjM TalkTalk - Doll's House http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1iBw12T3qg Heineken - Walk-In Fridge http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjkUkqTUHNc Hovis - Farmer's Lad (purely because my agency worked on it!) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FF_1r65LrBk&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Funny ad, but I know right now I am going to be absolutely SICK of it in about a month, after it's played back to back along with all the other footy and Olympics ads for the foreseeable. I'll enjoy it while its got a bit of life left in it, though...
My favourite adds recently included one with Gareth Southgate's penalty - the edited version, in which he scores. Hilarious.
I love their cheeky snippets in there, Capello picture leaving the building after 5 seconds, and Maradona cleaning the floor near the end. Very clever.
Is it just me who feels slightly uncomfortable seeing people draped in England flags? Racists and nationalists have ruined that for the rest of us.
Never have I cast a vote which counted for anything, and I am yet to go out into the world and get a real job, so I have made no contribution to society of which I can be proud yet. Pride and patriotism are two very different things. Patriotism is the root of nationalism and xenophobia, and though it is not harmful by definition, it has done enough harm by way of causation for it to earn my contempt. If anything, it contradicts multiculturalism, which is something I am a big fan of. Don't make me go on about it anymore, because we're deviating from the topic of this thread and I don't want to make the OP angry
Patriotism is not the root of nationalism or xenophobia, it is where people who are proud of their heritage, tradition and where they come from, celebrate this. The only people who turn it into, or 'believe' this makes it a root of xenophobia are those who are, either foolish, or offended by others taking pride in their background.
Patriotism and nationalism are hardly the same. Patriotism is having pride in your own country, nationalism is having views which are based around the supremacy of your own country at the expense of others. Good advert though, particularly like Stuart Pierce training fans on how to deal with penalty shoot-outs! While it's a horrible paper, I actually quite liked the advert the Sun had before the World Cup with Venables and others singing.
Your second sentence totally contradicts your first. I'm not saying that every patriot is xenophobic, but every xenophobe is a patriot. It's the same principle as with religion. Both are harmless in 99.9% of the population of the world, but the other 0.1% construe their religion or their patriotism as a reason to commit atrocities. What it boils down to is that patriotism has been the root cause of countless wars and genocides, even though it is a totally innocent sentiment in the minds of the vast majority of people.
