On the cricket front there are tours being made by Windies,Australia AND South Africa - now when has that ever happened before? - I take England to beat Windies,Australia, but to draw with Saffers. Also, there is the 20/20 World Cup in September/October, where England are the current World Champs. Obviously there is the Olympics this year in London. Euro Champs. Ryder Cup. Personally, I have got my tickets for South Africa saturday at Lords - always a great, great day - probably my sporting highlight this year (alongside being at Carlisle this season). Also Windies at The Rose Bowl I've also got tickets for Hockey and Water Polo at the Olmypics AND , i'm off sailing for a week in Gibraltar in June - looking forward to that too (if only to get away from poxy hay fever). AND going sea fishing off Bournemouth whilst the Bournemouth Air show is on in August. Wow, i'm bordering on being hyper-active Anything i've missed? What are you doing?
Well that looks pretty good then, and it might even help me cope with the withdrawal symptoms from our season coming to an end. If you want to hear some hillbilly music tonight my band "Paper Fish" is playing at Hopscotch wine bar next to Honor Oak station tonight. Must say I'm finding the first Charlton-less saturday quite hard. One day at a time. One day at a time.
Know what you mean, FHB - I've been reduced to gardening today - ye gods... Still, off to see Cheltenham vs. Torquay tomorrow. Saw that York City won the FA Trophy today. When we were promoted from the old Third Division in the 70's, we played our first Division Two game at The Valley against York City, amid much expectation. We went a goal down after about 50 seconds and got mullahed 4-2. How times change.
Its UFC ,BELLATOR, and various other MMA fight watching for me online plus boxing and the olympics...oh and the Euros
Other than the Euros I hate summer sports Wimbledon, Olympics (even if I am paying for them), Cricket........ I won't be watching any of them...... roll on Welling!!
I second that, I'm looking forward to the Euro's, but other than that, the pre-season friendlies will be the only other sport I'll be watching or care about.
What a bunch of ignorant heathens. maybe i should find a forum that is appreciative of the finer sports in life. Anyone who is dismissive of any sport other than football needs to have their brain examined (deeply).
As do people who don't rate a striker who's scored more Charlton league goals than anyone for 12 years touche...
Maybe because IMO,put quite simply, he isnt very good ! - anyone who gets 100+ chances a season should put put away more than what he has - full stop. He had about 10 v Stevenage, and at least 6 v Hartlepool, so 100 is probably not far off the mark- and how many did he score in those 2 games ?!....
But it's fair to say without his goals we wouldn't have got promoted. He still seems to be struggling in front of goal slightly, but it happens to all strikers. He's getting the positions. When a striker stops doing that then you have a problem
the higher you go, the more you cant afford to have someone who is..'struggling in front of goal slightly'
The higher you go, the harder it is to find a striker capable of scoring 22 goals in a season. (also, 21 goals the previous season playing for a team who got relegated and a team who plummeted to mid-table)
BWP has been a massive part of our success this season, of that there is no doubt. However, Stu has a point. He has missed a lot of chances this year, which League 1 teams have been unable to punish. Championship teams will.
I'd be willing to make a bet (proceeds to charity) that BWP will score 15+ goals next season (obviously barring injury). He'll get his touch back. He'll also benefit from a more creative midfield. As I said, it's a concern when a striker stops getting in positions. Any top level manager/player will agree to that.
I don't doubt that the second half of this season he's been quite poor. I no longer get as excited as I used to when he has the ball at his feet, or when he's played through on goal (instead I start to get quite nervous). If he has a decent pre-season then hopefully his confidence will come again, and he'll be back to lobbing keepers, leaping on defensive errors and placing one-on-ones into the bottom corner. We have to stick by him though, as he's one of the most lethal strikers outside of the Premier League and it would be a profound error to drop him for next year.
15-20 is a very good return (average for the best strikers). You'll then have 1 or 2 who will surpass that and score more than 20. Marksmen like billy sharp haven't scored more than 20 goals in the championship, but are considered one of the deadliest. So I'll go on record and say he will score 15 +(!!!!) and be recognised as a top championship goalscorer.
Rickie Lambert: League One 2009/10 = 30 goals League One 2010/11 = 21 goals Championship 2011/12 = 27 goals Grant Holt: League One 2009/10 = 24 goals Championship 2010/11 = 21 goals (Premier League 2011/12 = 15 goals) Steve Morrison: League One 2009/10 = 20 goals Championship 2010/11 = 15 goals It does happen...
