I get the immaturity/magic bit and if I agree with it...I once saw a comedian who said, if you walked into a book store, picked up a book and read about an all powerful magician who created a universe, created all the beings in the universe, got angry with them, killed them, plagued them, forgave them then sent his son down to be murdered by them, would you say, "wow, this is clearly 100% true, I'll live my life by this book" or say "Decent read...I wonder if Dan Brown has released anything new...?"

However, I still think you're too dismissive of religion as a positive force....Plus the football analogy, as you said, something doesn't have to be true to be comforting, how depressing would it be to follow a football team without ever hoping/believing that one year will be your year? Its the same with religion...My Mam is a practicing Catholic but married to an atheist and the mother of 3 more (+ 1 agnostic) she's also one of the most cynical people I know, so I asked her how she could be so level headed and yet still believe in something that has more disproof than proof...Her response was that she didn't know and didn't care if something DID or DIDN'T exist, all she knew was that when she went to church, for that hour or so of quiet meditation, she felt better...I say fair play to her and anyone else who uses religion in that way, it's no skin off my back!

I wouldn't in any way dispute that certain individuals use religion in a very positive way and they have my utmost respect if that is what inspires them to do good, I would however argue that religion itself is a highly immoral institute, run by corrupt groups and that it has done far more evil than good, however im with you, if they mind their own business and don't try to teach children it, or present it as 'fact' to children who are young and impressionable, then carry on, live and let live

Its has been mentioned that technological advancement and especially medical science is centuries behind where it would have been had it not been for the repressive nature of the pre renaissance dark ages and the stagnation it caused

Buddhists should not go to war if they follow the text but as in all religions everything gets distorted. EG The dalai lama reportedly now eats meat, he should be strictly veggie as all animals on the earth are equal not one above the other. The Pope in his popemobile has 3 inches of bullet proof glass and this is a man who is supposed to believe in the after life, guess he's not really all that confident. I'm sure the posters can think of countless other hypocrites from other religions. It's a fact wherever there are partisan humans there will be hatred eg Newcastle vs Sunderland. Personally I just think of all humans as vermin (planet destroyers) and think the earth would benefit from the demise of the human animal. Therefore, I'm a socialist in hating everyone equally, extreme right wing in hoping everyone dies out and a bit insane. Love to all the posters.

You sure shameless. I do really regret it before it was just sort of sunderland vs newcastle on here. Now its sunland vs sunland vs newcastle vs republicanism vs unionism . Suppose it's lively though. I remember reading 2 weeks ago a post bemoaning the lack of lively debate I suppose on the upside the post has cured that.

Please don't paint Christianity with the same brush as Jihad Islamification, it's unfair.

Religious extremism in all forms is pretty much standard in terms of barbarity. Islam at the beginning was quite a peaceful religion and was the worlds powerhouse of advancement in maths (Pythagoras), science etc... all the while brutal Christian extremism was very much embedded in europe hence the period of time being called the dark ages.
Roles eventually reversed as the renaissance brought about change in Europe while Islam became for extremist.

This...Islam preaches just as much peace as Christianity, most of the doctrine which is used to justify religious wars were because at the time Mohammed was dictating the laws of Islam, Islamic people were constantly under attack from outside forces...It annoys me that people believe Muslims are, due to the laws of their religion, innately violent...Find me a passage in the Qur'an that says 'get on a bus with a backpack full of bombs' ... It doesn't, nor does it say in the Bible 'take a huge force of mercenaries and murder Muslims' ... again, it doesn't! Interpretation to meet the desires of the powerful is what is truly dangerous!

When people talk about the existence of evil and suffering in this world, think of showing a hospital to primitive people who've never seen such a thing before. They would say, what the hell is this place? It's evil, you take people who are already sick, cut them open, stick needles and other **** in there, on occasions actually go through a systematic poisoning of the body. Obviously, if they were to see a bigger picture, all those things were done with the best of intentions, and generally acted for the overall good of the person.
