So did Hansen and Lawro. Our zonal market was a joke.

Because opponents just could not buy a goal in our zonal market.

Thats it, midfield is always about the partnership (or trio) that are in there with you, it is not a one man job. and yes the hollywood balls dont help but then gerrard is our biggest culprit of that and many fans are blind to those.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with this statement. He has scored twice in a Liverpool shirt and both the "goals" have taken massive deflections off opposition players.

He is terrible defensively and the only thing he offers in attack is the ability to sometimes manage to find a player with a long ball.

John Henry said himself it's not all about stats but anybody who's read Freakonomics knows not having stats - the "I watch the game, I don't need stats!" technique - gives you false correlations.

Stats can't give the whole picture but without them you have less information, something the critics fail to realise. Critics of stats think they have some superior game-watching skills and statisticians are sitting in the car park. "Pass completion tells you nothing," A common stat for the critics is that pass completion doesn't tell you whether a player has made a backward pass, as if passing backwards is all rubbish and forward passes are all defence-splitting killers. Lucas had excellent tackle and pass completion yet some fans still held the belief that he'd never made a forward pass in his life (I dunno what games they were watching) so was therefore rubbish. However, pass completion in conjunction with possession won shows Lucas was passing the ball off after winning it back, so a backward or sideways pass is then A Good Thing.

But that's far too much work for Andy Gray, the man who doesn't understand zonal defending, nor appear to be aware it got Pepe Reina three Golden Gloves, more than the rest of the PL keepers combined at the time. Reina even tied with Cech when Chelsea did the double and we came 7th. But apparently knowing who's to blame for a goal with man-to-man is a big advantage because the goal doesn't count and that defender will never make another mistake in his life, or something. No stats are available to back this up but watch the game and you'll see it's probably true.
