What do we think about Chelsea being interested in Simpson? Papers are saying he's turned down a final contract offer and will be sold in the summer and that Chelsea are thinking about coming in for him.

Now I know he has improved a lot this season, but I honestly can’t see any of the other  big clubs being interested in him. Is it just me:eek:? Of course, the story could be a load of media guff anyway but on the off chance it might have origins in some sort of truth, I just thought I would ask the question.

I know we don’t know the details about the negotiations (although I think I read somewhere that it isn’t necessarily the amount of money on the table but how it was to be paid), but it must be quite a big difference between the two sides for him not to renew; he’s said in the past that he wants to stay and I doubt there are many other teams out there that have the camaraderie and unity we have, so for him to turn the contract down suggests some major difference.

But I just can’t see City, Arsenal, etc signing him up.

Although someone will probably dig this post out in the summer when he signs for Man City/Manure/Arsenal/Chelsea

As long as he signs his contract or gets the **** out of here, I don't care, as long as it's sorted out soon, and not dragged along for the full summer.

After the season he's had it wouldn't surprise me at all for a club like Chelsea to be interested – if it is true.

He doesn't get the credit or appreciation he deserves at NUFC and some fans seem to be in denial regarding how good he has been this season.
Some of the flack he's had for supposed defensive 'mistakes' have been poor lapses you could blame the team for and if he slotted into a top defensive unit he'd live with it.

I think he's been one of our biggest success stories in terms of unearthing someone very cheaply and developing them into a very effective, consistent performer.
We should be careful before writing guys like this off and Mike Williamson is another one I think has been a revelation.

The only downer for his chances of joining Chelsea is he's not a fashionable, big name and I'd imagine Roman prefers to make expensive trophy signings than intelligent ones...

    100% agree.

He's been solid most season, but when we have a bad game everyone talks about how **** Simmo and Willo are.

    ****ing disgraceful.

Simpson has had a great season, like alot of our players but if i was listing our top players he wouldn't make the top 10 to be honest, he's replaceable and i'd be surprised if one of the top few teams came in for him.

I'm more concerned about losing Guthrie (who i really rate tbh)

If Chelsea are scouting him, then basically, they're out of their ****ing minds! Sure he's solid enough but I'd like to think we should be doing much better at RB let alone Chelsea

I'm not too bothered about losing him provided we get a classy left back which releases Santon to the other side.

I would really want to keep Simpson, but we always have Perch who's a solid enough 3rd choice fullback.

This is pretty much where I was coming from.

He has had a fantastic season and I agree with others that he has been unfairly made a scapegoat by some. I would be disappointed to see him go from the point of view that you play that many games with the same players around you, you develop a very good understanding of how everyone else reacts and that takes time to build up. He also won us numerous points by being in the right place (on the goal line) at the right time and again that comes from being part of a tight unit.

But saying all that, I don't think he is one of our top players (although definitely one of the most improved) and I don't see him in the Chelsea team precisely because of the point made by 2SilverSeahorses in that he is not a big enough name for them, which I agree is harsh.

As for Guthrie, I hope he stays but worry that he won't, although now that we are in Europe and the squad needs to increase maybe this will be an incentive to stay put.

If you mean hes been covered massively by everyone else in the back line, particularly Colo, then yes he has had a solid season.

He isn't good enough man, he might be the nicest, most committed, professional bloke in the world, but the fact remains he is NOT good enough.

He has his moments, but overall hes a below average right back, and if we had to keep him I'd want him to be backup at best, but if he doesn't want to sign a new deal than show him the door I say, we could get a LOT better.

Despite how good or how nice someone is, a harsh reality is, we're much better off without someone who doesn't want to be here.
If they feel they are not being paid enough, it will make them unhappy, time to move on!

He's solid but unspectacular. There are many worse, but similarly so, many better, if he was well replaced it'd be fine, but he's a good fit in our back four so it could be easier said than done. Like many potential in and out goings this summer finding a balance in order to push on is key.

If you can sign Debuchy, then Simmo leaving isn't exactly a loss.

Eh, he's replaceable. But if we can get 4 million for him, then that can go towards this guy :D
