Today it has been announced that Alex Ferguson has refused to let Javier Henandez go to the Olympics. Which in my opinion is disgraceful. At the last Olympics, Mascerano, Lucas and Insua all played, missing the start of the season. But the olympics could hit us, and our young squad heavily. Here is how. Its 90% certain Bellamy will be in the team GB squad. I expect Henderson to be to. Shelvey, Sterling, Kelly, Spearing, Wilson and if he misses the euro's, Carroll, could also be in with a chance of going. Coates could be in contention for Uruguay. I expect the FA will block Stuart Pearce from picking to many players from each club. But if a few of these players go it could heavily affect pre season and the start of our season. It could also force us to play main senior players, who have been to Euro's, play in the Europa League qualifying games. Tell me if I'm wrong.
I don't think Bellamy will go, he was thinking of retiring from Wales. I could be wrong here. I'd like to see the rest get games tbh, they are young enough and it would mean that their fitness levels are good going into next season. We should have a big enough squad to mix it up a bit for the qualifiers. Injuries are always the worry but fingers crossed we don't lose key players during the Summer games. I get your point and hope it doesn't cause us any problems.
I read some where the other day that Bellamy was going. I cant remember where. Obviously it wasn't official though. I think he may see it as a good chance to play some international tournament football and compete for some thing a bit different at the end of his career.
First of all, the olympics finishes before the season starts and for young players it would probably provide a better preseason if they were under a bit of pressure, than if they were playing our Europa League play off. Can't see Bellamy going, I think Spearing is too old. Henderson, Kelly and Shelvey are the ones most likely in my opinion. Though hopefully with a fully fit squad those three won't be missed if they take the first couple of weeks off to recover.
Fergie has said that if Hernandez goes then that'd be 3 summers where has played tournament football and will not have had the 28 days rests he prescribes for HIS players. I think Fergie knows a thing or two about how to prepare a squad of players for the long haul of the coming season, and if he says that rest is needed then that's probably true. Also, would the players benefit from the training/babble from the relative novice Stuart Pearce? It seems that those who are pro-Olympics want te players tro go regardless of what the club syas, and those who hate the Olympics thinks they shouldn't.
Ferguson has no affiliation to Hernandez's homeland and so only cares about Utd,Mexico look upon the olympics as important for the countries football and their national manager stated it was Ferguson's decision not to let the lad play and no agreement took place. Ryan Giggs was also kept from representing Wales by Fergie under the guise of non-existant injuries.
Ferguson has no respect for smaller national teams and uses his name and position as manager of Man Utd to persuade his footballers not to go to most games bar the competitive ones.
Spot on,cant blame him putting his club first but to deny some of his players the chance to represent their nations and get them to back his lies about phantom injuries due to fear of upsetting him is shocking.
I get what you are saying ( in a way ) about smaller teams but Mexico is always in contention in every tournament they enter. They are easily top 20 in the world and their u-17 team just won the world cup. They will be a force in a few years, they have some serious talent coming up.
I think Mexico are bigger on your side of the pond mate. They aren't considered a very good team over here. They're just seen as one of the decent teams from very weak qualifying areas like Australia, Japan, South Korea, Costa Rica etc who will never really make an impact on the latter stages of a competition.
It just makes no sense to me how a guy who has played for as long as Ryan Giggs has and managed 908 games for Man Utd has only managed 64 Welsh caps.
He was obviously told its Utd or Wales and a transfer,why else would he not want to play for his nation when fit? If it was a case of him thinking he was to good to play with 'lesser' players he should look at players like Rush,Southall,Rattcliffe etc that turned out when picked by the national manager.
Again, I see where you are coming from but it sounds very high horse. I know CONCACAF is not strong but ourselves and mexico usually do good enough to stay in the hunt of the top 20 in the world, qualify for WC, compete. That u-17 team kicked the **** out of everyone in the WC ( granted it was in Mexico) but they are going to be good. They are also starting to send more and more players oversees as we are trying to do to get them more acquianted with the Euro side of things. They have been on the brink the past few world cups but I think the draw was a bit unkind to them. Who were they with in the last one France, South Africa, and someone else? I think they got Germany or someone tough in the next round and that was that. Almost had the Argies beat the WC before that ( until a certain Maxi scored), and got US in the one before that so form was out the window.
I think it is a 100% dead cert that one of the three over aged player spots will be going to David Beckham. I think Ryan Giggs will be asked to play too. That leaves one spot for another over aged player. Since Pearce will try to pick a player to represent each of the four nations making up Team GB (I don't care what he or the FA's say), who is going to be picked to represent N.Ireland or Scotland...? 1. Beckham (England) 2. Giggs (Wales) 3. ...........? In other words, I don't think Bellamy will be going. Wasn't Hernandez not going an agreement between Man Utd and the Mexican FA...? Something to do with letting him rest after the injuries he has had...?

In that case, I say fair play to Man Utd and Fergie for getting their way PS - if Hernandez really wanted to go then there is nothing Man Utd or Fergie would be able to do about it!
