It will be exactly 10 years ago on Friday we played Tottenham at Filbert Street in the last ever match there. City won 2-1 with Paul Dickov and a diving header from Matt Piper winning the game. In the 10 years alot has happened since. 2 promotions, 2 relegations, administration, La Manga, League 1 and now our wealth. So this again will show people's age. What are your memories from Filbert Street? One of mine was when we played Red Star Belgrade in the UEFA cup at Filbert Street. Just as the teams kicked off there lot threw a red flare on the pitch, completely covering Tim Flowers goal and within the first minute they scored. Gerry Taggart went on a got an equaliser and it ended in a draw. Another memory was when we played Sunderland. Not the 5-2 where Collymore got the hat trick but where we won 1-0 and Ade Akinbiyi scored and took his shirt off. Its a shame it wasnt possible for us to stay at Filbert Street as i much preferred it to the Walkers/ King Power Stadium. The Carling stand was brilliant, the Kop was falling to bits but still great to be in there and the other 2 stands the less said about them the better. please log in to view this image please log in to view this image please log in to view this image please log in to view this image please log in to view this image
None of my memories actually involve a match - didn't go to many because I couldn't afford it as I spent all my money on Amiga games. Not getting into the ground with a junior ticket when I was 14 because I was 6ft with a moustache so I complained, got an apology, a refund and free tickets to the next game but was grounded by my parents so couldn't go. My mate nearly getting run over by Tim Flowers when leaving the ground who honked his horn after driving off so we chased after his car throwing stones. Winning free tickets from my school to see India vs Bangladesh (!?!) in a box but spending the entire match eating the buffet instead of watching the match. Good memories.
Was that the last time there was a pitch invasion. They wouldnt let us do it at Southend when we went up or when we played Scunny. They said if we did the players wasnt going to come back out
I was there! .... me, my cousins and mates were in a long queue to get into the Kop - the police moved any Oxford fans from Pen 1 up to seats in the double decker so that they could ease congestion by opening Pen 1 to home fans - however, some wag, opened the big secyrity doors to Pen 1 from the inside and hundreds of us were carried into Pen 1 on a huge human tidal wave of desperate foxes ... obviously we were trying hard not to go with the flow because we would much rather have paid ........
What's scary is that it was over 20 years ago when I was a bright eyed teenager! I ended working with the best mate of the Oxford goalkeeper later on in life, bloke by the name of Judge I think
I will now show my age ... my best Filbo memory was as a 10 year old boy going with my old man to pick up our season tickets - it was the 69/70 season i.e the one after we had lost the cup final to Man City and been relegated - so a number of season tickets had 'come free'. My mum and dad had an off-licence just off the Saffron Lane and a rep for one of the Tobacco or Sweets companies was an old City player, Chas Chandler (I think) who my Dad had watched when he was younger (Arthur Rowley was my Dad's fave) anyway Chas had some connections so arranged for the old man to get tickets in the double decker about 3 blocks from the right hand side as you faced the pitch. We went down to Filbo to pick the tickets up during the week before the start of the season and they let us go up to our seats to see where they were etc so that we'd know for the Saturday. I remember walking all the way up those stairs then going up the few from the upper concourse to where you could see the pitch. It was sooooooo green and all marked out and the nets were up - my little boy smile must have been a mile wide - wow it was just like on the telly (but in colour!) We played Brum at home in the opening game that Saturday - I had a brand new blue and white bar scarf, and the old man bought a programme and Westlers hot dogs with onions on our way in. We won 3-1 and Rodney Fern scored a bicycle kick - the crowd was 32,000 for a second division game - my love affair had started and whilst the relationship has been rocky at times I doubt it will end until I follow my old man to that great Blue & White Kop in the sky ...
4-4 v Watford on, I believe, boxing day but I don´t remember the year. This always comes in my head at moments like these. I remember when we played v Sheff Utd (around 88 / 89 our GK, Kevin Poole I think, got a bang on the head. He carried on playing & we ended losing 5-2. Bad day. I also remember Iwan Roberts banging in a hat trick one home game... was it v Pompey ?
February 1975 FA Cup 5th rd second replay v Arsenal. Although we ended up losing 1-0 there were 39,000 crammed into Filbo that night fantasic atmosphere under the floodlights. Best atmosphere ever for me at Filbo.
first game rotheram home April 1982 won 3-1, my first site of the legend Lineker Liverpool home on a Weds night 1984 3-3 draw, against Dalglish, Rush, Souness, lee, Johnston, Lawro etc. what a night! Hillsborough day at home to Chelsea, won 2-0 but chelsea t*ssers kicked off in the double decker, fighting all over, then the tannoy announcment about the semi final, evryone just wanted to go home and see the news Cambridge home in the play offs 5-1 And last but not least about half dozen games against Wolves watching walshy and Steve Bull kicking ten bells out of each other! Proper football with proper footballers!!
With you on that one ... John Radford free kick I recall .. the popular side was so packed that night - amazing - would also sling in the Leatherhead FA Cup tie ... both in terms of relief and atmosphere
