Anything would be targetted for 2030 though! I'd be very surprised if the current owners were around. Anyway, a nice touch and interesting plans to discuss nonetheless.
City council come up with these vision documents every year. 90% of what is proposed never actually happens as its all down to private investment to come up with the dosh to do anything these days. Yes, in 5 to 10 years, the area around St Mary's "could" be regenerated with Saints assistance if we have the money to do so and it would assist the club to have access to the waterfront for both matchdays and non-matchdays, but as far as I'm aware, the current aggregate tennants have no plans to move their businesses unless Dibden Bay gets built (which it won't). Also, the Gasometers are going no-where. They are vital for storage of gas in the city and there's no chance of any new ones being built elsewhere. So, bit of a pipe dream really.
Cheers CBK, as someone who doesn't live locally that was quite insightful! I must admit that the Gasometers are an eye-sore of sorts as you get to the ground and impossible not to notice but they have to be there so c'est la vie.
I have a copy of a document published in February 1942 entitled âReplanning of Southamptonâ in which the general principles upon which the future planning of Southampton might be based. It contains lots of plans and illustrations of how Southampton might be developed after the war. I have attached a couple of illustrations which I should think people might enjoy. CBK is right to be cautious but if a percentage of the proposals are carried through it will very much improve our city.
With over a thousand jobs going in this city I doubt much building will be going on apart from a student ghetto or two.
why dont we rebuild the gasometers, and this new biomass plant on a derelict peice of land 20 miles to the east of southampton, and pipe the gas in. Now, we just need to find a derelict site in portsmouth where they have no further use for it????? Any ideas anyone?
Whilst I accept that these proposals turn up every now and then, I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand completely. For example, Cortese didn't come to Hampshire just for the football. There's money to be made here too, and he will be interested and will attract money in just by being at Southampton FC. Redevelopment of the area just goes hand-in-hand, and besides, Southampton is a major maritime city and waterside residential developments are an absolute winner if done correctly. The trick is to do them correctly, and successive Southampton City Councils haven't had a huge track record of doing anything that well.
I'm sure it's true of a number of cities but Southampton has always seemed so disjointed. I'm not expecting it to happen, but the area and club would benefit from some decent eating/drinking establishments within a close proximity but for it to work on non match days then the pull of the water would have to be opened up.
