I'm sure Whittingham must be a good player, but whenever I have seen him in a big game, he has been poor. I have heard good things about Redmond of Birmingham, while Burke is an obvious choice from the Brum if they don't go up, although I'm basing that purely on his statistics this season. Anyone know a bit more about Burke? Is he RM? Pacey?

Has anyone mentioned Chris Burke, the Birmingham winger. Apparently he has more assists than anyone else in the Championship. Worth keeping an eye on in tonights game.

Edit - just noticed Burke above. Great minds and all that.......

Yep, again, would be chuffed with Whittingham.
Matt Phillips I'm not 100%, don't feel I've seen enough.
    Quality CB, yes please.
Leftfield signing for the unknown excitement factor.

Right footer who plays right mid, very consistent from what I can tell, slightly faster than lallana as far as im aware but not mega pace. Think he would be a very nice acquisition. Think he's averagely skillful too but not sure?

Great minds indeed Lff! And to be fair I must have only beaten you two it by a few seconds! But based on his statistics alone he has been one of the top performers in the league this year and yet interestingly he didn't make it into the team of the year. I wonder why.

Cheers Saint. Be interesting to see if he sticks with Birmingham if they don't go up, or if not who he ends up with.

I was just about to post the same. Don't really want him, to be honest.

Whittingham played very well in the league cup semi-final against Palace. Give him time and space and he has the ball-playing ability to rip teams to shreds, but without that luxury his threat is compromised. He never really imppressed for Villa when he played for them. West Ham didn't give him space and neither would anyone in the PL. I'd be disappointed if we signed him.

Whittingham isn't what we need. We already have those sorts of players in our squad.

Burke impressed me a lot when he was at Cardiff. Sets up lots of goals, quite skilful, good at beating his man to get a cross in, and scores a few too.

Same for Whittingham, he's a class player. Imagine the composure and metronomic passing ability of Schneiderlin and the set-piece delivery of Fox. Oh and he can score goals like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiV5XqJiO9Q

Any team could use a player like him.

Cuellar would be an absolutely awesome signing, covers well, good in the air, good tackler. If we got him I'd see us as easily mid-table. Villa fans are horrified he's being let go, and I only hope Sunderland don't get their grubby mitts on him. Dann i've written a bit about elsewhere, in that he always looks scared and doesn't seem to lead the defence well. However whoever we sign will get my backing, I just hope it's someone more like Cuellar.

Why is Whittingham so over rated on here? I think he's a good player but he doesn't add anything to our team.

He's not overrated, it's just that some of us recognise him as the player that he is — along with Lambert and Lallana, the best player in the championship this season. Of course he would add something to our team.

Apart from dead balls, does he do anything that Morgan doesn't? I'd argue that Morgan is a better player, but doesn't get the plaudits because he doesn't do dead balls and isn't a one-man team. Each to our own I suppose, but imo he is an incomplete player.

They're totally different players. Schneiderlin is a defensive midfielder, his tackling and defensive play are far superior, but Whittingham is more offensive. Imagine Lallana minus the tricks but with better technique striking a ball. His crossing, set pieces and shooting from outside the box are at least as good as anything we have in our team. He played in central midfield this season but has played most of his career as a wide midfielder.

some have this fixation that wingers must run like the wind. look at our strike force- lambert and sharp would have heart attacks trying to keep up. a skillful player with good close control that can cut inside please i.e lallana mk.2

What are you on about? He's a Left-footer who often plays CM and is nowhere near as quick as Lallana.
Could be useful in away games as part of a 5 man midfield as he's bound to get a few assists with his set pieces. But our 4-4-2 at the moment desperately needs pace added to it. Also worth noting he scored about 20ish goals the season before last which, as has been pointed out on numerous occasions, is something we're currently lacking. At the right price I would welcome him but can't see him displacing any of the current midfield initially.
