The new manager should be given at least the same amount of time as Hess was, of course that is dependent on the fanbase. As you say I think Hess was given the benefit of the doubt too much, unlike Stimson who was hounded out for pretty much the first day. Does that make football fans fickle hypocrites?
... yes but that is the nature of football. I am not sure how the fans will react to the new man, but there is one thing for sure if he starts winning he we be lauded as the best thing since sliced bread.

I hope he is successful and the situation I envisage does not come about but I won't get my hopes up.

brb The owners of Betfair joined the Board of Swindon and brought their billions with them. That is the only reason that di Canio is there.

So far as Gills are concerned, if Jackman re-signs, if Birchall is back scoring goals and if the left side of the defence can reach the standard of the right side, then a cardboard cutout as manager should achieve promotion with some ease.

Hessy has done all the hard work. A very small amount of effort needed to finish it off and three conditions to fulfill. Well within the capabilities of a cutout.

I think not much needs to be done to the team, someone needs to change the way we train so that we don't get as many injuries, we should not have a tough pre season, I know a new manager may want that to look over the players, but if he does that should only be for trialists who are trying to get a contract and we should not have a massive rebuild of the team as that would be bad.

That's exactly what PS is going to be selling to the candidates: 'It is a strong squad for this level so we will not be giving you a transfer budget but you can use wages and fees gained from out of contract members of the current squad/sales. Employ tactics and invigorate this squad to gain automatics.'

This type of job sounds particularly like a Peter Taylor kind of affair which I would dread, look what happened with Wycombe! That said we would be having Junior Lewis as a backroom staff member hahah!

Careful gents...this type of talk is exactly what occurred pre-Hessenthaler regime!

If if's and but's were candy and nuts, we'd have a pretty sweet lookin' squad.

Just have to say I am willing to wait to see who we get, I don't want Scally to rush just to please us, he should take a few weeks to have a look over what is on offer and to look at the candidates and their CV's, this is a very important decision he needs to make and he needs to make the correct one.

The dye is cast for next season and providing the new manager does not interfere there is a high chance of success. An active manager could easily make a mess of things which is why the prudent decision will be to appoint a cardboard cutout.
This is not as flippant as it sounds. Just look at the facts. The BIG4 (Birchall,Kedwell,Lee, Whelpdale) are, I am reliably informed, on three year contacts. This is how we got them from under the nose of Crawley. So these four will play, no arguments. Jackman will probably sign a new 2 year deal, Scally cannot risk losing player of the season, and Payne, poor as he has been on many occasions will play because many fans demand it. Gazza will play in goal unless he is sold in which case it will be Flitney. The business case is indisputable to buld the team around this 7. Then the highlight of recent weeks has been the strength of Fish and Essam both individually and as a pairing. So thats the team.....two places on the left side of defence to be recruited until Davies and Evans are ready and cover for lee's suspensions.
Promotion on a plate I reckon so long as some smartarse does not come along and pluck defeat from the jaws of success by making unnecessary managerial input. A cardboard cutout will clarify the decision making process (there will not be one) and it will facilitate the anti Hessy lobby being able to blame Hessy which of course will have a strong element of truth because the contract position being inherited allows little scope for discretion on tactics or team selection. At least the sicknote gang will have moved on.

sorry mate but preseason is all about getting you players match fit, especially the players who you want in the starting 11. it has been said that we were tired at ends of the games this year and that is down to match fitness (the ability to play for 90+ minutes) yes some players had to face spells on the sidelines but without a preseason of matches how do you except our players to get through 90 mins in the first 5-10 games of the season.

yes bring in trialists etc but a fully fit squad should entail less injuries hoepfully. however we do definatly need to change the way we train or where we train or something cos we pick up way to many niggles over the course of a season that sees players missing games randomly ruining any cohession we have in the starting 11.

    sorry rant over

I really hope we don't go anywhere near blackwell, he lacked ideas and left a sinking club in Luton to go and sink another in Sheff Utd. Ince would be interesting enough but would leave quicker than Martin Allen would. I wonder what the odds on Bruce would actually be haha

Should we really be worried about someone not staying for the long term? People are talking about Peter Taylor, and he was only here for a season...

superbob using that same link that I also posted on another thread earlier, people might like to direct themselves to the Hull City section, some of the managers being mentioned in hope of a Gillingham replacement are also being mentioned in line for the vacancy at Hull for which Steve Bruce is currently 16/1. Basically shows anything could happen.

Micky Adams is one of the better options, and the link worked.
