The Allies decided to ban it in 1945 (singing "Germany, Germany above all..." could be seen as being somewhat insensitive - it's PC gone mad...), in the mid-50s the third stanza was adopted as the anthem, but it wasn't made official until 1991. It's not surprising, looking at the anthem in full, why 2/3 was dropped... Germany, Germany above everything, Above everything in the world, When, for protection and defence, it always takes a brotherly stand together. From the Meuse to the Memel, From the Adige to the Belt, |: Germany, Germany above everything, Above everything in the world! :| German women, German loyalty, German wine and German song Shall retain in the world Their old beautiful chime And inspire us to noble deeds During all of our life. |: German women, German loyalty, German wine and German song! :| Unity and justice and freedom For the German fatherland! For these let us all strive Brotherly with heart and hand! Unity and justice and freedom Are the pledge of fortune; |: Flourish in this fortune's blessing, Flourish, German fatherland! :| It came up on QI, before anyone asks...
What was wrong with the second stanza? Women, song, wine and loyalty? Fascist bastards! Didn't the Nazis use a different one, anyway?
Just don't mention the war... Back to where we will finish. I think Newcastle will win and us and goons will draw. Means we'll end 5th and start moaning about Harry again
Weird how football works out isn't it? 3rd and 4th play 9th and 10th on the last day of the season. Martin Jol!!!!!!!!!!.
Oh no, I reopened the tick tott thread for them. Too funny to ram that one down their throat. Whatever happens (and there could be a world of pain for us to come) over 38 games, we were better. The league doesn't lie.
Chelsea V Blackburn has to be the most meaningless match I've ever seen a top team involved with. What the hell's the point of playing it?
It's almost uniquely pointless. Neither team can move in the table and Chelsea won't want to risk anyone getting injured, while the Blackburn players will be watching their own fitness too, with an eye to a move. I think that both sides could happily agree to a 0-0 draw now and nobody would be put out.
H is very close to T on the keyboard so make sure you don't press the T when posting about Hoilett. No I'm not sure about Yakubu either.
Actually when we played the away match against them they were also down near the bottom, but I didn't think for one minute that they would go down. They seemed to have the best squad of all the teams who might be in the relegation zone. Shows how wrong I was! Mind you, the team that turned up (allegedly) in the return match recently couldn't have been more different.
