Scottie Road a pub on every corner and often one in between. For sure you couldn't drink your way down Scottie Road. You could buy anything that had been nicked from the shops in town for the price of a pint on a Saturday night.
That song was sung Mickey Finn,Jackie Hamilton and Stevie Faye dave, remember them from the comedians?
can't say i do remember them. I spent 2 summers when I was 15 and 16 sined-on with Palm Line as a cadet (still got my NUS Cadet ticket somewhere). After the last trip, my Old Man had to pick me up (literally) from Scottie Road after a signing-off party
When Scotty was broken up it was sad dave, but im glad that someone like your good self remembers it in its heyday.
Page, it had a character all of it's own but even that couldn't hide the fact that it was indeed a slum!
It was a slum that the people that lived there remember fondly dave,as in community spirit, leaving your front door open and knowing your house/tenament was safe.less crime against the people by the people within the community. But progress was always gonna come, but like we said a few weeks ago they demolished the slums but they also took the overhead railway down with them, what a missed opportunity in this age of tourism.
Can't argue with that Page. Remember I spent a lot of my early life around Park Road/Mill Street and it was a community and you could leave your front door open and the kids could roam far and wide. We didn't have a lot but we still felt a cut above those who lived down Scotty Road.
The Scotty roaders were told the same in reverse. On a serious note,do you remember the volunteer pub on Park Place?,well if you do you might remember my uncles shop a bit further up the road. Durkins across the road from St Pats church,it was a corner shop kinda place even though it wasn't on a corner,he owned one on Park Lane as well next to the Lord De Tabley pub.
Sorry mate, I've been trying to visualise it but I'd be telling fibs if I said I did. We had a corner shop on Pecksniff Street that sounds just like your uncle's. Me Nan did most of her shopping on North Hill Street.
Ah ok dave, his shop on Park Place was opposite St Pats Church, and the one on Park Lane was in between the Scandanavian Church and The Lord De Tabley. He was absolutley loaded,so my cousins tell me.
I'm hitting the sack so I'll leave you with this
