I cant remember going into the last game of the season so underwhelmed and disinterested. We are playing in a game that could well decide the premier league champions. Some of the countries top players will be on show, the ground will be sold out and the Sky cameras will be there, and yet, all is ghostly quiet. A few attempts at what team with little response but like you all, I am struggling, I hope to god we feel better on Sunday and the team is fired up and they in turn fire the crowd up. I along with many others have complained about performance of late, a lack of effort, a lack of that killer 110% effort, but, should we, the fans, be getting the team fired up? I love my club but right now, if I'm honest, I'm not in love with them and I'm struggling to know why, after all I have had many worse season ends.
I agree Syd, its like a damp squib of a finish to the season, and we've had a few in recent seasons, we no longer have the nail biting relegation threatened seasons end that seemed our destiny not so long ago, and we certainly don't want them back but MoN has to come up with a squad that can play all the 38 games without this tailing off business and I'm convinced he will, its going to be an interesting summer in the transfer markets, lets hope he gets it right.
TBH this is the biggest summer and season in years coming up. In past years we have always found an excuse, well found is the wrong word it was just there. No investment from the board, a lack of ambition, a manager who was OK but never quite top draw, sum standard players and the list goes on and on. We now have Short who talks about his hopes and ambition and O'Neill who is top draw. We have a full window to move players on and bring players in, a pre season to prepare them so no excuses left. None of us expect miracles but we do expect a decent season, if we manage to bring O'Neill down to our level I will give up.
Remember, as we DO.................Next season will be the one for glory, as every next season is for all Sunderland supporters. and so it will be forever I suppose. Well in my lifetime.
I think the team have felt like us since the Everton cup game. Out of the cup, safe from relegation.Couple of results may have gotten us to the Europa placings but think everyone was deflated after the no show in QF. Still in love with them tho. Season ticket renewed. Looking forward to Sunday and next season
Have to say when the fixtures were done and I saw Manure last game, I for one was hoping we were not having to win that game to avoid relegation, but it's turned out we are safe and we could be the team to prevent them from winning the league. Unless Citeh win of course which they should do, or worst still Manure bang in about 20 plus goals!!
Boredom is better than horrendous anxiety as we face the drop, its the same for all teams between 7th and 16th who are safe every year by now, most fans will be feeling the same going into this weekend, we are nothing special. Just think of the summer to come and the team to be built, thats what is so great about footy, there is always hope for next season.
come on !! we've been asking for a season with midtable mediocracy for years , here we have it with a cup run . Dont complain look to next year and better things. how many seasons can we say that with 4 games left we were safe. Lets be happy for what we,ve got
Syd. I dont think as a squad we are a million miles off being more than decent, our Keepers are OK all three of them if Gordon stays, our back four unit has done OK bearing in mind we don't have a left back, which has to be the second priority after new strikers, we don't have a lot of pace at the back but our goal difference is the best outside the top six or so, and would be a hell of a lot better had we fielded a 20+ striker. The midfield needs someone creative, is Sess a midfielder or striker but I suppose he falls in between both catagories so we do need someone but who?. I needn't mention the strikers as we all know its our achilles heel and has been sine Bent left and probably before him as we relied too heavily on him scoring all our goals. So a summer of waiting and a lot of patience for us fans, come on MoN get it right for all our sakes.
Just about sums football. When ther is no involvement top or bottom it does feel flat. My own view as an oldie is that there is a possibly a case of TVitis. As I see the scenario both games start at the same time and what if QPR score? with communications the way they are it would soon be conveyed to the pitch and what then? Put the lethargy on the back burner lads and take the romantic, if skewiff, view of the game. ManU still have everything to play for and our players have alot to prove to the supporters and themselves. It could still become a spectactular show, pantomime or pop concert remains to be seen. In my day it would have been reading the back page and doubtless Charlie Summerbell (look him up if you don't know him) would have set the scene for a battle royal.
Usually wear a kilt for the last home game of the season and make a real day/night of it, so I'm still looking forward to this game very much..
I love my club but right now, if I'm honest, I'm not in love with them and I'm struggling to know why, after all I have had many worse season ends. That's the mediocrity of mid table.....The last few seasons have sen Toon and Mackems growing used to fighting for promotion/avoiding relegation....being safe isn't so exciting is it? Lol God, it's hard to be happy.
