I remember their fans forum the next day saying they had never seen away support like it. The said Man Utd, LIverpool, Leeds nor the Blunts took that many there, mainly because we actually exceded the allowed capacity and they even put us in the uncovered corner 'cheese wedge' section!
I've been to Hillsborough twice. The first time was in '05 with the OP goal, the second in our promotion season. Wednesday had lost all of their opening games, perhaps 6? And we lost to a Francis Jeffers lob. Not the best trip home I've ever had.
Indeed. I was in the home end due to the turnstile chaos at the away end. What utter madness as many City fans that night only got in near to half time,, but what a game and result. Went mental as i walked away from the ground at the end. Now first job on Tuesday is to Offer Olifinjana to Dave Jones. Take his wages in full and he is yours. Deal or No Deal Dave ?
I also have to say I think people writing them off next season are premature. Dave Jones is an excellent manager and I've always wanted him here.
I arrived at Leppings Lane about 5 mins before kick off and got in after about 35 -40 mins with the score at 1-2. The kid on the cash turnstile had a massive cardboard box full of notes and looked frazzled, just saying 'pay what you can'...Fifteen or twenty, he wasn't bothered as long as you didn't want any change. He could have easily put thousands of quid in his pocket and the club would never have known. What was the official gate - about 28K? Reckon it it must have been 30-32k , as we took approx 7k. That's 4k in upper tier, 2k in lower tier, 1 k in crow's nest.
I remember they gave the attendance wrong. Clearly that night, Hillsborough was nearly full but they only gave it as 27K, i think. What a day that was. All my mates had tickets and i wanted to go to tick it off the grounds i'd been to. I didn't have a ticket and TT was sold out. I had to race home and persuaded my dad to take me. We luckily got in just before the Ndumbu Nsingu goal for them right at the start, so i saw all the match, more or less. As for the Sheff Utd match, the singing was class from City that day and it rallied the lads. Deffo penalty on Green, i think, but the ref was blind as usual. The last goal was gutting but they were chasing promotion at the time. I do remember the bloke trying to get a Paddy Kenny though. Despite him getting alot of stick he does give it loads aswell. There was alot of stuff being hurled at him from the City end over the years- "aye aye Paddy how's the wife" etc. Hillsborough is miles better ground than Brammall Lane. It's got to be one of the best old grounds in the country.
Wasn't one coach load of fans being late getting in that night due to the driver having gone to Bramall Lane first?
Quite pleased the Wendies have come up, only ever been there once for the 1 1 game, got hit by a car that night! I'd like Huddersfield to come up through the play-offs too, nice easy game for me to get to, less than a 20 minute walk from my front door to the Galpharm!
ill always remember when i finally got up the stairs about 20 minutes in, there was a copper stood watching the game, i said to him, kid on the turnstiles might need some assistance down there mate, its chaos, could be a crush, - not my problem was the reply thought considering the ground we where at it was an interesting response from her majestys finest, ha.
Was about to say the last time i went to Hillsbrough those who i was with got run over! And someone said the Wendies fans where friendly.... Tbh i like Sheff Wed even went for that awful pre-season game there and i still liked the ground, i just don't want to many other Yorkshire teams coming up, Stevenage would be nice, nice easy 4-6 points for us, i would much rather that.
We was stood at the end of the stand with the cheese wedge in between us and their fans, ended up getting bombarded with coins, great night though!!!
It was for me, it holds better than Arsenal in my esteem. I remember at the time, when the final whistle went at Wedesday, it was a feeling of real elation. It sounds daft, but against Arsenal, when we equalised, I already had the feeling we would go on and win.
I wonder if Phil Brown would get a welcome back? I doubt it myself. He would not get a welcome back from many. He is a spent force. That should cheer the poodle up, wot wot.
