We've achieved a couple of fantastic runs in the league this season the 2nd of which we beat some very tough teams even if there was some luck on our side. But as with every season recently when we put ourselves in a strong position to do something we choke...here are some of the reasons I can think of; 1. MENTALLY WEAK - Part of it is down to Wenger ability to motivate the fragile mental state of his players but he's also signed these types of players 2. ONE STYLE OF PLAY - We lack adaptability to change our playing style (for example being 3-2 up at home to Norwich with 10 mins to play you should be able to grind something out but they have no faith in their defense play so just play to attack and get caught out 3. SQUAD TOO WEAK - We don't have enough quality in our squads and when injuries occur our run comes to an end...is it any coicendece that we've not won in 4 since Arteta was injured. It's such a thin squad that a few additional injuries and your left trusting Ramsey to help you qualify for the Champions League...watching him jog back without any real care for the 2nd goal yesterday was embarrassing!!! SOLUTIONS ??? 1. NEW NO.2 - Pat Rice is leaving we need a new No.2 and someone who has excellent defensive organsitational skills because right now no has our back line functioning as they should be 2. IMPROVE THE SQUAD DEPTH - Season after season we lose key players and bring in average quality to replace it. We need to keep RVP and Co. but can't keep players like Ramsey, Park, Chamkah if we want to achieve anything. Podolski is a start but we need better quality in the CB position, and quality No2 as well
Where do i say I'm not pleased to still be in with a chance for 3rd ?!?!?! Any Arsenal fan would be delighted by the results today but why leave it relying on one of the wore teams in the league and Spurs going down to 10 men to help us clinch it. Are you happy if that's how we get 3rd? Would that give you confidence for next season?
I think this thread is spot on and summarises well our issues not just this season but for many. Very good post
Thats the biggest difference between us as fans - for me it is about much more than finishing 3rd no matter how.
Agree on all three points. 1. NO MENTAL DISCIPLINE 2. "DESPERATELY LOOKING FOR PERSIE" MATCH PLAN EVERY GAME 3. 10 PLAYERS OUT OF 25 THAT CAN NOT BE TRUSTED. Wenger complains about the 25 players rule, but yet has more that enough players in his squad who are clearly not ready to stand up and play. What is the point of having them in the squad ?? Gone were the days when we could give a youngster playing time because we have already won it. We do not need "huge potential" in our squad, let them play for our reserves. We need dependable subs. The guys who can play a simple but reliable game. We do not have them. I can see Ramsey in a couple of years can be this sort of a player. Loan him to a good EPL team which will teach him how to defend in midfield and he will be a good squad player.
Point being that, that is all that is achievable this season, so as long as we get it, it doesn't matter how. We can all have aspirations to win the league and the champions league, but that ain't happening, so 3rd is the best we can get.
PISKIE'S role on this forum always seems to be as devils advocate Whatever you post he'll argue the other angle Of course it matters how you achieve something because it speaks to the quality of our team not only for now but next season. If you truly want to live in the moment fair enough but for me and 7 seasons of failure to achieve any real success I want/expect more and my points raised where examples of why i think we keep failing. Not caring how we get 3rd means you can't care if we improve I care that we improve for next season and fix these deficiencies that have plagued us for so many seasons
I wholeheartedly agree with you. The other side of winning by default and not playing well is that it leads to players leaving the club - with an ambition to achieve more. If someone like RVP sees no real hope of improving, they are more likely to leave.
You'r right AJamesHowe. There are things wrong with this team that has long needed to be addressed. I hope they get their heads right for the WBA game and changes forthcoming this summer. Arsene has shown that he is unable to motivate this side anymore so really what's the point of him staying?
Not at all I'll argue against views that I don't agree with, which is natural really. The point about not caring how we get third though is completely relative to the fact that we have one game left this season. It has nothing to do with not caring if we improve. Like I said we can all have aspirations to win the league and the champions league next season, I want to see us address the issues that are clearly there and come next season, I'll have expectations for us to win a trophy. But as it is, we're talking about getting 3rd and we've got 90 mins to do it, so I don't care if we scramble an injury time winner of the backside of Squallaci to be honest, just as long as we do it
