i would say Ferdinand, he calmed our defence down when he came back from injury and Sir Alex looked after him well but i would say when players on form, Ferdinand and Vidic are the best partnership and the thing which makes Lescott good is Kompany next to him.
OP should have just started an "I want to have Vidic's babies" thread. or at least more accurately "I will tell you all who the best defender in the prem is and I will not even consider anyone else even though Vidic can't stay fit for a season any more".

I think that Kompany does improve Lescott, however Lescott and Cahill have improved massively now they are playing regularly for stronger clubs. Whereas I fear Ferdinand and Vidic are past their apex and look a yard slower. Not saying that in their prime they were not a better pairing (although Vidic's cynicism always infuriated me), however I cannot see those two surpassing Kompany and Lescott again.
i don't know about Ferdinand, but Vidic will surpass Kompany again when he's back, im sure he will, we miss him, like i said before and like you say Lescott looks good because Kompany is there to help out, Lescott looks completly lose and looks s**** when Kompany is out.
I agree about Vidic being the best defender in the league, he's such an inspirational leader, and can score score goals as well.
