Good. He's more qualified for the role than Harry Redknapp. But it'll probably end up like it did for him at Liverpool. He'll come in preaching sensible, realistic goals and the fans and board will turn on him because they think England should be winning titles despite not being anywhere close to doing so for decades and he'll get sacked.
More to worry about if there is a vacant manager job at The Hawthorns........can anyone else think of a now manager who is "greatly respected and will be West Brom manager in the future"......
But Micheal Appleton has said, quite consistantly, that he wants to rebuild Pompey, that he wants that chance to get this club back on its feet. I wouldn't begrudge him it if he decided to go to West Brom but I dont think we've had any reason to doubt his word about his commitment to Pompey.
Funnily enough I'm not worried. Appy knew he was coming to a club with a chequered history and it wasn't likely to be plain sailing. I think he wants to make the club his own - by his own admission he had other offers and only something "special" would tempt him. If we still have a club next season Appy will be part of it - that's my prediction anyway
Clearly they have the wrong man for the job, it should have been me, after all I am well known for my moderate views and firm belief in discipline!
SB3, should you become England manager and subsequently fail to win the Euros, you would be sentenced to the naughty step for the rest of your days... And they don't serve Carlsberg Special Brew on the naughty step either...
Think (and hope) that 'Appy will stay at PFC. However, just down the road from here is a very successful manager who could well make the next step up career wise by joining a big club like West Brom as their new boss - and he could then raid his old club for players like Lallana / The Piemeister / Sharp / Cork, etc., etc., etc.
So you think it is more tempting an offer for a manager who will be in the Premiership anyway next season, with momentum, finance, facilities and squad all looking good' than to someone with an uncertain future, league one, creaking infrastructure and financial troubles with the squad being flogged off in a fire sale. I mean why would Appy want to swap that?
You would probably find it strange for West Brom to employ a manager who had only been managing for less than one season and also saw his side relegated BUT They know him and what he can do AND he would be cheap OH dear
To be honest- it doesn't matter who's our manager for the Euros or the 2014 World Cup; our current squad couldn't win either! Do you reckon Henderson will make it into the Irish team ?? Likewise, could Huseklepp make an impact with Norway ?? If so, maybe their transfer value could go up
If Appy goes, who could blame him? I think he has shown great dignity, 99% of the time, after being sold down the river.
Sorry Possum & channon - but my main point which you both tried to ignore - is whether WBA would attempt to lure your successful manager Nigel Adkins to The Hawthorns as Roy Hodgson's replacement, and thence the possible raiding of your club for your best players. Not a "throwaway comment", it could well happen, as you well know...........
Sorry Wd but I think you are still drowning your sorrows and still have alcohol in your body. There is a better chance of Pompey having a Real Billionaire buy there club, have back to back promotion in the next two seasons and not out of the top 2 in the Championship for the whole season when they get promoted to the Premier league. Let's be perfectly honest both are just pipe dreams if your a Pompey fan.
The Daily Expresss was reporting yesterday that Appleton is top of WBA's list to replace Hodgson as he is both highly respected and is known to the players. They apparently don't want to run the risk of bringing someone new in who will change the coaching set up hence Houghton won't be considered as reported elsehwere. The article seemed to suggest that Appleton's tenure at Portsmouth was a trial run to see how he got on managing a Championship club and that a return to the Hawthorns was always anticipated. I can't verify the accuracy of this paper (!!) but it also suggested that Appleton was frustrated at loosing the bulk of high squad. Can't see him staying - a major setback for PFC ashe is probably one of the brightest , young managerial talents in the country at the moment.
Hodgson was in talks with the FA for four hours or so. I bet that Appy's name was mentioned at least once during all this. Does anyone think that maybe he'll join up again with Roy and England in some capacity?
