The league is however a better indication of each sides true quality and i would still value 2nd over the carling cup. The FA Cup would be different.

This. The Carling Cup has only papered over another season of disappointment for Liverpool, and possibly their worst performance in the league for over 50 years. Much as it only papered over fairly disappointing seasons for us in 2006 and 2010.

The FA Cup would paper over the cracks in a much stronger way, but if our positions were reversed then there is no way I would take a cup double over being at least three years away from a realistic league challenge, and not even qualifying of ol' Big Ears. For a club that's so obsessed with 'five times', Liverpool seem remarkably relaxed about missing out on the top table for the third time in a row.

Cardiff, Millwall, Portsmouth. Just some of the recent FA finalists of recent years. The FA Cup papers over no cracks unless you are deluded.

The cups offer you a chance for silverware, you dont judge your season on it and you most certainly wouldnt call it a success unless it was matched by a good performance in the league relevant to your clubs stature. For example Wigan winning the FA Cup and staying up is very successful. Liverpool or Chelsea doing it and finishing 6th or 10th is a failure. You get £1milliopn for winning the FA Cup, its not even going to cover the players wages for the game.

As you said Swarbs, at United the 2 league cup wins where we won nothing else just papered over the cracks, maybe not in a good way as things didnt get addressed quite like they should. As it turned out we did very good off the back of the 2006 win but thats because we are Man Utd and we are a million times better than the likes of Liverpool just now. We are capable of using the momentum from a cup win to take us to greater things. Liverpool are certainly not capable as has been proved years after year. They go backwards after cup success.
