I use IPtorrents.com but they have taken away all our free invites, need to donate $10 to get a free invite - bit like the Catholic church in their 'donations' the cheeky bastards.

I just use rapidshare and various other places that directly link to mediafire or rapidshare. Works a treat for what I need, mainly obscure music from obscure secret places.

I used to think like you, but the reason the private torrent sites work brilliant vs the Pirate Bay is that everyone has to share - so you go to a wee bit of an effort to set up your files to share on a dedicated seeding machine, then you don't really have to worry about it forever after. For instance I've got a little Network Attached Harddrive which has Bittorrent built into it, so I leave that turned on all day seeding all the things I've downloaded without having to use computers etc to share back. My current ratio is Uploaded:4.11 TB, Downloaded:351 GB - so basically I can download everything I want at about 10x the speed of public torrent sites and not really have to worry about downloading too much, as the little hard drive turned on all the time shares more than I could ever download.
Good news: I've got an invite to give away for torrentday.com which is fantastic for movies and tv shows (mainly US). Bad news: you'll have to risk pming me your email address if you want it
