To be fair you can only judge any team on their current merits. We are a top 6 team. Teams change so much now over any close season that massive leap forwards or backwards can happen every year. Therefore there is little point in looking back or ahead, you have to live in the present. Presently we're a top 6 side and will be at the end of the season. In terms of a transfer policy, you have to look to build on your current side to keep up with those around you. We have to work on the basis we're a top 6 side transfer wise or you're automatically accepting your going backwards. Not being funny, but in terms of a business model, this would represent one of the worst around!

Teams below the top 6 change drastically, but the top 6 are there or there abouts the same each season.
Liverpool spent huge to move from top 6 to top 2 and it backfired, but next year who is going to be the favourites for titles and CL qualifications; us or Liverpool?
A front runner in the "rest of" pack might make the leap and catch the back runner in the top 6 one season but it takes a lot more to consistently stay there.
Spending big might not be the answer to staying in the top 6, wisely researching players and character to see how they will fit in could be the better approach over success and big fees.
Our approach could see us in the top 6 again next year, then we can be a top 6 team, or it could see us drop back.

I disagree. You are where you deserve to be and there is no reason to think we'll go back over. Obviously the board can change that but everything has been done with a positive intent of late. I see no reason to think we'll suddenly fall behind Liverpool. Its for them to catch us. Money is not the key, quality is. We have that at the moment and if we can retain it and add to it we should top 6 again. Obviously teams outside the top 6 like Liverpool can try and spend their way in but I'd prefer to be in our situation where you already have something that works.

would be a pointless signing imo. specially when we have the likes of ferguson, santon etc. whatever happened to van aanholt? wheres he playing now? would easily have him back in an instant

He has struggled since leaving his loan stint at Newcastle, Wigan had him on loan too and he didn't impress.

Van Aanholt is at Vitesse for the season.

As for Fryers, I think he'd be signed in a similar sense to Abeid, one for the next few seasons to bring into the team. I'd imagine he's the replacement for Kadar.

Not much of a discard at the age of 19 in all fairness.

Of course I hope we carry on as we are next season and we are where we deserve to be, but I think its to early to say we're a top 6 team.
I also disagree with the suggestion teams change drastically each season, forwards and backwards, they do but still in the mini leagues.
When Everton achieved the Champions League all those years back everyone viewed them as fortunate, a team punching above their weight.
Well dones and congratulations went to them but they weren't considered a champions league/top 4 team.
They failed to qualify for the tournament proper and next season fell away so never gained the CL exposure. Perhaps because they weren't title contenders in the premier league.
Spurs qualified and it was a similar story. Not serious challengers for the premier league but it helped they had a successful CL campaign.
Just missing out last season and having a good tilt at the title until March this year has raised their profile as a CL team / top 4 contender. But the first season I don't think they were classed as top 4 or 6. More gate crashers.
I think we need consistency before we can call ourselves a top 6 team.

Each to their own I suppose. I see us a top 6 side. I wouldn't have at the start of the season but if we retain what we have and add to it as you'd expect, then I see no reason for us to go backwards.

I think being a top 4 side is slightly different to be fair. The examples you mention about Everton and Spurs are a bit different to what we're suggesting about ourselves. I'm not saying if we finish 4th, then anything below that next season is failure. The CL mini league is very compeititive in comparison to top 6. I just think outside of that I fail to see 6 better sides.

The transfer dealing is the key with us I think.
